Eating one piece of fruit could help you eat healthier all week. If you eat it right BEFORE you go grocery shopping! Researchers from Cornell University found shoppers who had eaten an apple beforehand bought 28% more produce than cookie-eaters. They also bought less junk food. The explanation is simple: Once you eat a healthy snack, your subconscious guides you to STAY on a healthy path, with almost zero effort. But remember, the trick only works if you eat fruit right BEFORE you shop.

Losing weight could be as simple as making a grocery list and sticking with it. That’s according to a RAND Corporation study – which found that about a third of shoppers always use a grocery list. Another third sometimes do, and the rest NEVER take a list to the store. The result: Those who planned their meals in advance and shopped from a list weighed 5 pounds less, on average… that’s compared to those who bought whatever struck their fancy. The researchers believe planning what you’re going to buy before going to the store helps you stay focused on what you came for……And better able to resist high-calorie and high-fat food and treats.

If you’re retired, you’ll live a lot longer if you go grocery shopping every day, instead of once a week. That’s from research on nearly 2,000 people in Taiwan. Because the physical exercise, social interactions, and mental gymnastics of planning meals, buying ingredients, budgeting money and cooking boosts our mood, brainpower, and health. All of which have been proven to lengthen lives.

•First: Go shopping! Several studies show that shopping gets your mind and body moving – both of which benefit the brain.

•The second way to age-proof your brain: Watch something funny. According to research at Stanford University, hearing a joke engages most of the major regions of your brain. And the more you use your gray matter, the healthier it stays over time.

Those reusable grocery bags may be good for the environment but not so much for your health.

Reusable shopping bags may be covered with germs. Our friend, microbiologist Charles Gerba, says reusable grocery bags can be contaminated with e coli because few people wash them out after carrying home their fruits and veggies and meat.

So make sure you wash yours in hot water and dry it thoroughly before reusing it.

Save money at the grocery store.

Do you find yourself humming along to the easy-listening tunes as you shop at the supermarket?

Research shows that music with a slow beat relaxes people and makes them move more slowly. And the more time you spend in the store, the more you’re likely to spend. So be aware of this little marketing strategy at the market and you’ll spend less.
