If you live with a roommate – or a partner – go ahead and share your living space but don’t share razors! Microbiologist Dr. Charles Gerba says that shaving creates tiny nicks and cuts that allow blood and bacteria to be transferred to razors – so if you use someone else’s razor, you’re exposing yourself to their bacteria – as well as blood-borne diseases. Like hepatitis B and C, and even HIV. So never share a razor!

When shaving your legs, use baby oil, coconut oil or argan oil – not shaving cream. Dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe says the chemicals in aerosol creams can dehydrate the skin. But baby oil is hydrating. Plus, it makes hairs swell – so you’ll get a closer shave. You’ll also reduce the buildup of dead skin cells, so they won’t clog pores and contribute to ingrown hairs. One more benefit? Oil allows the razor to move more easily, so you reduce the risk of razor burn. So try baby oil instead of shaving cream.

Guys: Are you looking for a reason to stop shaving?

I have the latest research on the benefits of having a beard:

First: They prevent blemishes. Dr. Shannon Trotter is a dermatologist who says a lot of the rashes and acne that guys get are the result of shaving… Because when you drag a razor across your face – day after day – it irritates the skin in a way that spreads bacteria, and triggers infections, redness and dryness.

Also, Having a beard is like wearing built-in sunscreen. A recent study found that beards block anywhere from 50% to 95% of the sun’s UV rays. Which is almost the equivalent of wearing sunscreen with an SPF of 30. That means a beard – in addition to wearing sunscreen – can play a key role in preventing skin cancer… Which is a big deal, because 4-in-5 cases of cancer in men appear on the face, head, or neck.

One more fact about beards: They help soothe allergies. Just like the hairs inside our nose trap air pollutants that trigger allergies… A beard provides an extra layer of hair to snag pollutants before they reach our nose. However, like any other air filter, if you don’t keep your beard and moustache clean, it’ll cause allergy flare-ups.

Is it time for a new razor?

Here’s a gentle reminder to break out a new razor. Because with an old blade, you have to press harder or go over one area several times. And dermatology professor Dr. Mona Gohara says that’s a recipe for inflamed hair follicles…… also known as razor burn. Plus, broken skin is a perfect opportunity for infection to work its way in. So use a new razor every week.
