Try this mindfulness technique, no matter what type of exercise you enjoy. It comes from trainer Nora St. John: Every 5 minutes during your run, bike ride, or rowing session – take out your earbuds or pause your workout playlist, and tune into your breathing and body movement. Make sure nothing feels off or awkward, and correct it if it does. St. John says that will help you become a more efficient exerciser and help prevent injuries.

When it comes to exercise, running is one of the top calorie-blasters.

But some exercises do even more:

…Like indoor rowing. It burns two calories more per hour than running. Plus, it uses the muscles in your legs, back, arms and core.

Next: Burpees torch 4 more calories per minute than running. But you need to blast out 10 in a minute.

One final exercise that burns more calories than running: Jumping rope. Plus, it uses more muscle groups than jogging, and improves your balance, and coordination.

What’s better at the gym:

Spinning or rowing? According to exercise physiologist John Porcari, if you want a total-body workout, you can’t beat a rowing machine…also known as an ‘ergometer’. It works your legs, rear, shoulders, back, arms and core all at once. And all you need is 20 minutes to get a complete workout… One and done. Spinning is good – but it mostly works your legs.

Walking is good for your heart.

Walking 5 to 6 times a week is one of the best ways to prevent obesity and eliminate heart disease. Research shows that walkers actually shed more weight than bikers, and even rowers. Why? Because people tend to be more consistent with walking than with more demanding workouts, since it doesn’t take as much effort, and it’s free!

Also, walking improves your memory. In a study, volunteers were better at recalling a series of numbers when they were walking on a treadmill, than when they were just sitting still.
