If you don’t want to toss your cookies on an amusement park ride, do two things. This advice comes from amusement park expert Pete Trabucco, author of “America’s Top Roller Coasters.”

Open your eyes: Looking ahead helps your body adjust to dips, which makes for a smoother ride. That’s why it’s better to be in the front of the ride than the back. You can see what’s coming.

Also, bend in the opposite direction: For example, if the ride pitches you to the left, try to bend your body to the right. This’ll help prevent motion sickness.

You know those warning signs outside roller coasters that say “Do not ride this roller coaster if you have a heart condition?” Take them seriously! Because riding a coaster with a steep drop, that goes over 100-miles per hour, alternates between moments of gravitational pull and weightlessness – where your organs literally float inside you.
Also, some roller coasters are violent enough to reach forces 4 times greater than the Earth’s gravity. And can push your heart rate to 200 beats per minute… and trigger dangerous changes to heart rhythm. So if you have a weak heart – or a weak stomach – sit out those extreme rides.

Know this: A new study found it’s not always the biggest and fastest rides we should worry about. More kids get hurt on smaller rides – and there are about 20 injuries a day, totaling over 4‑thousand a year. So which rides account for the most trips to the ER?

Bumper cars: 4% of injuries.
Roller coasters: 10%.
But carousels account for 21%!

Which explains why one-third of all kids injured are typically five, or younger. Something to keep in mind for your next trip to the amusement park.

Hail or lightning?

The answer: Lightning. Hail may sometimes get big enough to crack windshields and dent cars… But deaths are rare. The last death from hail was a baby in 1979. But lightning kills 150 people a year in North America… So follow this rule: When thunder roars, go indoors. What if you’re caught outside? Look for the nearest enclosure. But don’t touch anything metal while you wait out the storm.

What’s more dangerous: A trampoline, or a swimming pool? The pool. Backyard trampolines send 100-thousand people to the emergency room every year – mostly unsupervised children with broken bones and head injuries.

But trampolines kill only 1 person a year… While 1,500 people die in swimming pools… According to the Red Cross, drowning is the second-leading cause of accidental death in children. And it can happen in a minute – so swimming lessons and constant supervision are a must.

What’s more dangerous: Bees or sharks? The answer is: Bees. You’re 53 times more likely to be killed by a bee than a shark. In fact, you’re more likely to be killed by a bee than any other animal or insect.

At an amusement park, what’s more dangerous: A roller coaster or a water ride? The coaster. They go much higher, much faster, and have a lot more moving parts. In fact, half of all amusement park deaths are caused by roller coasters… Twice as many as water rides.
