Crossing your legs at the knee can boost systolic blood pressure – the top number – by 7%. Cardiologist Dr. Stephen Sinatra says it also stresses the hip joints and traps blood in our veins, increasing the risk of dangerous blood clots. So, keep your feet flat on the floor… or cross your legs for 15 minutes, max.

If you want to keep your teeth healthy, make sure your dentist knows what medications you’re taking. Dr. Reid Blackwelder is with the American Academy of Family Physicians. He says drugs like antihistamines, antidepressants and blood pressure meds can slow the production of saliva. And a dry mouth allows bacteria and plaque to build up faster, which can raise your risk for gum disease. So, knowing what meds you’re taking can help your dentist better protect your teeth and gums.

Eat more protein. According to a large study – which looked at a quarter of a million people – increasing the amount of protein you eat by 20 grams daily – the amount in one egg plus a half-cup of almonds – is all you need to reduce your risk. Just get your protein from a source that’s not RED meat – because that can increase your risk. The researchers say protein lowers blood pressure, which is why it helps prevent strokes.

or having some “me” time. Because a new study finds that feeling worn out and run down increases the chances you’ll have your first heart event by 36%. To cancel out that risk, you need to find a way to care for yourself every day – whether it’s making time for a workout, coffee with a friend, or even a few minutes to read a book for pleasure. Doing that daily can prevent anxiety, isolation and depression – and improve your heart health as a result.

According to The National Breast Cancer Foundation, one in 8 women either has – or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. But the men aren’t safe, either. 1,700 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, too. So, we’re going to help lower your odds of developing the disease. Here’s what you should be doing:

First and foremost: Exercise. Research shows that it’s the number-one thing you can do to lower your risk. A study from the National Cancer Institute found that women who average 3 hours of exercise per week, over their lifetime, have a 23% lower risk of developing breast cancer. So, why is it a magic formula? Because exercise lowers estrogen levels – and estrogen is a well-known factor in cancerous changes in the breast.

Tip #2: Watch what you drink. Alcohol is a double-edged sword… While it’s been linked to a lower risk of heart disease, it increases your risk of breast cancer. One study found that each daily glass of alcohol raises a woman’s risk by up to 12%.

And lastly: Get more vitamin D.

One study found that women who got the most calcium and Vitamin D had a35% lower risk than those who got the least. Unfortunately, nearly 75% of us have inadequate levels. Many experts now believe that taking 1,000 IUs of Vitamin D daily is best.
