Taking a day off! Longevity researcher Dan Buettner found that Seventh Day Adventists tend to live longer than average. Because they encourage their congregation to totally switch off one day a week, and spend the day resting and reconnecting with loved ones. So no texting, no TV, no work. The day off gives the brain time to reset itself and reduces stress levels, which has been proven to improve health, and increase longevity.

It’s a trend our researchers spotted, with many fitness centers offering a class called “Napercize” – where you work out for a while, then go down for a nap with a bunch of strangers. The temperature is taken down to 67 or 68 degrees, which is ideal for sleeping, and each person gets a little cot, a blanket, and an eye mask.

The class is designed to help boost your mental and physical wellbeing and reinvigorate the mind and body.

While it may seem ridiculous to some people, taking naps has remarkable benefits for our mental health, which is backed by research from Pennsylvania’s Allegheny College. And think about it: Nap-time has been working for years in kindergartens all over the planet. So, maybe it’s time for us adults to give Napercize a try.

If you can’t sleep, get more magnesium in your diet. According to the Journal of Research in Medical Sciences, people who get enough magnesium in their diet have less trouble sleeping. Because it helps neurotransmitters in the brain shut things down at night, so we can relax and rest. To get the optimal amount, all you need is a handful of nuts and seeds daily.

First, you won’t typically get jet lag unless you cross two time zones. If you have a trip coming up that does, before leaving, start operating on the time zone to which you’re traveling. Get up and go to sleep at the correct hour for your destination – and plan your meals according to that schedule too.

If you can choose your seat on the flight, try for a window seat. That way, you can adjust the window shade depending on the direction you’re traveling. Get more light if you’re arriving during the day – close the shade to reduce light exposure if you’ll be arriving at night.

Also in a window seat you’ll have an easier time sleeping. It’s easier to prop up a pillow next to the window – and you won’t have to get up every time your seatmates need the restroom.

Lastly, skip the in-flight movie. Watching a movie stimulates you more than it relaxes you. And can keep you from getting much-needed rest.

What should you do at 2pm every day?

Nap. Your body’s natural rhythms are telling you to. Your body temperature dips at 2pm every day making you feel sleepy. And a 26 minute nap can make you feel better. Why 26 minutes? A NASA study found that’s exactly how long pilots need to rest to see their performance improve by 34%.
