Go stand in the sun!

According to research from the University of Arizona, exposure to the sun’s blue light rays increases your brain’s ability to process information… guaranteeing it’ll get stored in your long-term memory. It activates the hippocampus; that’s the part of the brain that stores memories.

So, the next time you need to commit something to memory, head outside, and stand in the sun for a few minutes while you mull it over. You’ll cement it in your memory banks.

Here’s an easy way to make special memories last longer – whether it’s a vacation, a wedding, or anything else. Actively tell yourself, “I want to remember this.” Then get into the moment – really soaking it up with your senses, NOT your smartphone. Because research from Penn State University says the more ways you give your brain to remember an event, the easier it’ll be to recall down the line, and the more likely you’ll recall the positive emotions linked to it.

Because that can prompt you to be more physically active, and make exercise a regular part of your life. Researchers at the UK’s Bangor University found having a visual cue where you’ll see it all the time – say, something you always use for exercise, like your water bottle, ear-buds, or running shoes – makes people more likely to follow through and work out. The physical reminder boosts activity in the brain region linked to organization and planning – and literally doubles your odds of becoming a regular exerciser.

For example: Using an unusual typeface. Odd fonts – especially those that are hard to read, make us look more closely at the text. This means, we pay more attention to the material, and are more likely to remember it. Looking at an attractive person can increase your ability to recall information, too. People do better on memory tests if they briefly gaze at an attractive member of the opposite sex, first. It puts us in “impress your potential mate” mode. And our brain switches into overdrive so we can prove how smart we are – and that we’d pass that on to our offspring.

You know, those moments where you go into the kitchen and forget why you went there? Brain health experts from Duke University say it’s NOT an early sign of dementia. Those lapses are your brain’s way of telling you to chill out. Because when we’re overloaded, our brain can switch into power-save mode, making us forgetful. So slow down, regroup, and try to do one thing at a time. That’ll help your brain focus.

Dr. Jeff Brown is the author of The Winner’s Brain. He says gesturing improves your ability to recall a conversation. In fact, it’s especially effective to “air write” something you want to remember – like the milk you need to pick up, or a phone number. The hand movements encode your memories in a different way than verbal cues – improving your recall.

Do we really need to cool down after a workout?

Yes, but NOT because it helps our body recover faster. It’s because doing a cool-down makes us ENJOY our workout more. Kinesiologists from Iowa State University say people who do a cool-down remember their workouts as more pleasant than exercisers who don’t cool down. And it makes them more likely to continue working out. That’s because we tend to remember the LAST part of an experience more vividly than any other part. So if the last section of our workout was a feel-good cool-down session, we’ll think the ENTIRE workout was more pleasant. So what about any physical benefits? Well, doing a cool-down – say by walking after a run – can reduce the chances of dizziness or fainting. Because blood tends to pool in our lower extremities if we work out hard, and then stop cold. So spend 5 to 10 minutes doing an easier version of your workout – or some simple stretches – to get the mental and physical benefits.

Misplacing your smartphone could be stress-related.

stress-lost-cellphone2-wp

That’s because chronic stress floods the area of the brain responsible for short-term memory with the hormone cortisol. Figuring out and dealing with the root cause of your stress is the best way to get your memory back. In the meantime, experts suggest writing down what you need to remember. Because when we write things down, it enters our memory two ways – so we’re more likely to store the information.
