Whether it’s a fern, English ivy or even a succulent, like aloe, being surrounded by greenery prompts an immediate mood lift, and lowers your risk of depression. According to the University of Michigan, our brains are naturally primed to release feel-good chemicals in the presence of nature, and it also triggers a relaxation response. Even when we’re stressed! Being near greenery also increases our ability to concentrate, makes us more productive, and boosts memory by 20%.

When you go on vacation, even if the plane has Wi-Fi, don’t use it! Positive psychologist Michelle Gielan has found that travelers need 12 to 24-hours to get the health-boosting benefits of complete relaxation. And if you wait until you reach your destination to unplug, you’re essentially shortening your trip. So the second you get on the plane, start to unwind. That means all activities should reflect your vacation mindset. You’ll get into relaxation-mode more quickly.

In one study from the University of Rochester, people who looked at something green felt significantly calmer and happier. It works because green is associated with peaceful, natural settings – which can help relieve anxiety and stress. Scientists even call it “the green effect,” and theorize that our brains have evolved to relax at the calming sight of trees and grass.

It doesn’t matter if you’re not exactly Van Gogh, doing something artistic, whether it’s painting, drawing, sculpting, or even decoupage or knitting – can pull you out of a bad mood. That’s according to research from Northern Arizona University. In their study, when people created art – even if they didn’t consider themselves artistic – they felt happier and less stressed. That’s because art distracts you from negative thinking. And the repetitive movement involved triggers a relaxation response.

Can you sweat away pounds in a Jacuzzi or sauna?

Not exactly. Here are the facts from researchers at the University of Maryland: Let’s talk about the Jacuzzi first. Yes, it’ll raise your core temperature…But bubbling away in a hot tub for 20 minutes only burns 5 more calories than spending that time on the couch, watching TV. It will, however, improve circulation. So what about a sauna? The dry heat will sweat away a few more calories than the hot tub, but the difference is negligible.
Bottom line: Enjoy a sauna or a Jacuzzi for the relaxation benefits…But don’t count on weight loss.

Wear an over-the-counter acupressure wristband! The kind that helps motion sickness. A study found that insomniacs who wore an acupressure wristband fell asleep faster, slept more deeply, and woke up fewer times during the night. That’s because the same acupressure spot on the inner wrist that prevents motion sickness and nausea, also induces deep relaxation at night.

Do you suffer from headaches or even worse, migraines?

I’ve got a list of surprising headache triggers and helpful remedies.

Stressful relationships can trigger a headache. That’s because when we’re anxious, we tend to take shorter breaths, leaving us oxygen-deprived. Our body tries to compensate by constricting blood vessels…And that constriction can cause head pain. So, when you feel overwhelmed, try the 2-5-5-5 method: Take 2 minutes, and breathe in for 5 seconds, hold it for 5, then breathe out for 5.

Aromas. 1 in 50 headache sufferers are sensitive to specific “trigger smells”, like gasoline, tobacco, and perfume. If that’s you, carry a bottle of essential oils to sniff when you’re around trigger smells. Especially lavender, which has been shown to boost relaxation, or peppermint, which reduces pain.

A sunny day. According to the Northern California Headache Clinic, the glare of the sun bouncing off water, pavement, glass or snow interferes with the area of the brain that controls pain…Which can cause an instant migraine. So, try wearing sunglasses with polarized lenses, and putting them on before you step outside.

Take a shower! Just 10 minutes under a blast of hot water is enough to boost the production of the calming chemical oxytocin, and it slashes your stress hormone, cortisol. Studies have found it’s so effective, it can hold off stress for 12 hours.
