So how do you know if they’ll work for YOU? Take one for 20 minutes, and see how you feel when you wake up. UC Riverside psychology professor Dr. Sara Mednick says if you wake refreshed, you’re one of the 45% of adults who’ll enjoy clearer, more creative thinking, and sharper motor skills after napping. But if you wake up groggy, naps just aren’t your thing and they NEVER will be! Dr. Mednick says the ability to wake up energized can’t be learned. It’s in your DNA. And you’re either wired to benefit from naps or you’re not! And if you’re a habitual napper who takes at least a couple naps a week, you can’t STOP! Because if you decrease the amount of sleep you’re getting – including those naps – your thinking and motor skill function will go down the tubes. It’s a huge productivity killer.

Can you add that to your recommended 8 hours of sleep? Not really. That’s according to Dr. Raj Dasgupta from USC’s Sleep Medicine division. He says the type of sleep we get when we conk out during the nightly news isn’t quality sleep that will help us wake up feeling refreshed. Its more like a nap, that only takes you to the lightest stage of sleep – not the restorative, deep sleep which clears away harmful brain proteins, improves memory and encourages the formation of new cells. So, just because you caught 20 winks on the couch, doesn’t mean you can sleep less once you go to bed for real.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re an early bird or a night owl…Because our bodies are hardwired to get a big chunk of our overnight recharging done between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. So, sleeping during those hours will help you wake up feeling refreshed.

If you have trouble meeting an 11 o’clock sleep deadline, turn off the lights at 10:30, and try listening to a few chapters of an audio book. Half an hour of listening will get your body primed for sleep, and distract your mind from whatever you’re worried about, making it easier to fall asleep.
