A study found women who did yoga for 2 months were more likely to quit for good than those who did simple stretching exercises. That’s because yoga includes deep breathing and being “in the moment,” which helps cut nicotine cravings by lowering anxiety and lifting a person’s mood. So if you’re trying to quit smoking, practice yoga twice a week for a couple months, and you’ll be far more likely to succeed.

If you like to have a cigarette occasionally, say with a glass of whiskey, or at a poker game, there are consequences! The National Cancer Institute studied 300-thousand people, looking specifically at the risks of “light” smoking. The result: People who smoked less than one cigarette a day were 9 times more likely to die of lung cancer, and twice as likely to die of heart disease, compared to lifetime nonsmokers. But the good news is, it’s never too late to quit! Researchers found the risk of an early death was greatly reduced once people quit totally. And the younger people were when they quit, the longer they lived.

Eat more fruits and vegetables! Researchers at the University of Buffalo polled 1,000 smokers every month for over a year. At the end of the study, those who ate the most produce were 3 times more likely to be tobacco-free – and to have avoided smoking for at least 30 days… compared to the people who ate the fewest fruits and vegetables. The researchers also found that smokers who consumed the most produce smoked fewer cigarettes per day, waited longer to smoke their first cigarette after waking, and were less dependent on nicotine. So why does eating healthy food help you quit? Because one healthy action often starts a chain reaction of healthy behavior. It gets you thinking in healthier ways – and you don’t want to ruin all your hard work, and blow it, by smoking.

A lot of smokers reach for a cigarette to calm their nerves, but actually, the opposite is happening. And smokers who quit have less anxiety, depression and stress. That’s according to the British Medical Journal. In fact, smokers who quit get a mood boost that’s equivalent to taking antidepressants!

So why do smokers think cigarettes relax them? Because they interpret their withdrawal symptoms as stress. And those symptoms can come on after only a couple hours without a smoke. Then, once they light up again, those withdrawal symptoms go away. But within 6 weeks of quitting, ex-smokers experience a significant improvement in mental health.

If you’re a smoker, maybe it’s time to give up smoking for 2019.

Nearly two-thirds of young adult women do what’s considered “light smoking” – meaning 5 or fewer cigarettes a day. But no matter how many cigarettes you smoke, you’re setting yourself up for an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, tooth decay, and cancer of the lungs, liver, throat and pancreas. And research shows that light smoking can be as hard to quit as chain smoking. That’s how addictive nicotine is.

A lot of people don’t want to give up smoking because they’re afraid they’ll gain weight. If that’s your excuse, you’ll have to find a new one – because researchers at Brigham Young University just blew that theory up in smoke, so to speak. They found that cigarette smoke actually causes metabolic changes that lead to WEIGHT GAIN. Even worse: The effect is stronger with SECONDHAND smoke. So a husband who smokes may gain a few pounds – but his poor wife breathing in all those fumes will gain even more. So if you’re looking to lose weight – ditch the cigarettes.

Live a happy and healthy life!

If you want to live a longer, healthier life – make two friends and call them frequently! Researchers at Brigham Young University analyzed 150 studies and found that people with a strong social support network – meaning, they had a circle of close friends –saw measurable decreases in blood pressure, plus improved immunity… Which decreased their chances of dying from any cause by a whopping 50%. And the researchers say that’s just as big a boost in survival as quitting a pack-a-day cigarette habit.

Because although you WILL gain weight right after you quit – in the long run, you’ll lose it. That’s according to the Endocrine Society in San Diego. They found that though ex-smokers gained a few pounds in the eight weeks after quitting – they actually lost weight and belly fat in the long run, after 6 months. And they had less nicotine and carbon monoxide in their systems. So go ahead and quit. You’ll live longer, you’ll feel better, and once you make it past the first 8-weeks, you’ll lose weight.

If you don’t smoke – DON’T START.

There are foods that make it easier to quit smoking. According to the journal Nicotine & Tobacco Research, dairy products, like milk, cheese or yogurt, make cigarettes taste awful! So the more you eat them, the less likely you are to smoke.
