There are a ton of non-dairy milks to choose from, but which is the healthiest? According to researchers at McGill University, soy milk packs the biggest nutritional punch when it comes to plant-based milks. The researchers found soy milk contains more protein than all other plant-based milks. It also contains phytonutrients, which have been linked to a reduced risk of cancer.

You’ll feel more satisfied! Researchers from the University of Copenhagen found people who ate plant-based foods, like bean-and-pea “burger” patties, felt more satiated, compared to the carnivores. The reason? Because beans are rich in fiber, which makes you feel fuller, faster, and takes longer to digest than meat protein.

People who follow a vegetarian diet cut their risk of developing some cancers in half. That’s according to the British Journal of Cancer. The researchers found people who didn’t eat meat were 45% less likely to get cancerous blood conditions, like leukemia and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. And overall, vegetarians were 12% less likely to get any form of cancer.

…others drink Gatorade, or chocolate milk for the carbs, electrolytes, and calcium. But the ancient Roman Gladiators had their own post-workout recovery drink, full of vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes. And the secret ingredient was: ASHES!

Researchers from the Medical University of Vienna analyzed the bones of Roman gladiators to learn more about what they ate. And discovered they were drinking a combination of water and plant ashes, which were consumed to fortify the body after physical exertion, and to promote better bone healing.

Fabian Kanz is a forensic anthropologist who led the research. He says ashes were the ancient way to replenish electrolytes.

So should we be adding plant ashes to our protein smoothies? Well, the scientists say they DO have some nutritional value. They contain high levels of calcium, which we need to maintain strong bones. But if you’re already eating Greek yogurt, kale, broccoli, and sardines – or taking a calcium supplement – you probably can skip the ashes.

It’s not your imagination… research shows that fingernails tend to grow about three times faster than toenails. Scientists say it’s because our fingers are closer to our heart than our toes… which means they receive greater blood flow and get more of the nutrients they need to grow – including protein, calcium, and vitamin D.

It turns out, the more fiber in your diet the better you’ll sleep. According to the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, people who munch more high fiber foods – like beans – spend more time in the deep, restorative stages of sleep. And in the study, people eating more fiber cut the time it took to fall asleep in half. And it only took one day for the changes to take effect. So why does fiber help us sleep better? Because it takes longer to digest, so the nutrients are released more slowly into the bloodstream. And that helps the body have an easier time winding down at night.

Unless you have a problem with dairy, don’t swap your cow’s milk for almond milk. That’s the advice of registered dietician Jaclyn London. She says they both have the same number of calories, calcium and vitamin D… but almond milk can have extras you don’t need or want. Like artificial ingredients to make it taste creamier… and added sugar, to sweeten it. So stick with regular ol’ milk, unless you have lactose intolerance. And in that case, look for unsweetened almond milk…… or go for unsweetened soy milk, which has as much protein as skim dairy milk.

You’re exercising like crazy – so why aren’t you losing weight?

Here are 2 possible reasons:

Mistake #1: You eat back all the calories you burned — and then some. That’s a symptom of “runger” – the hunger you feel after a big workout or long run. To avoid runger, have a small snack 30 minutes before your workout. Something low-fat and high-carb – like graham crackers with a teaspoon of honey. That’ll digest easily and give you instant energy. Then, an hour after your run or workout, have only protein and healthy fats. That’ll keep you feeling full, so you won’t overeat.

Another reason you can’t seem to lose weight – even though you’re working out: You love “sports foods.” All those gels, chews, and drinks that supposedly energize and hydrate you are unnecessary – unless you’re exercising more than 75 minutes or doing a particularly insane workout. Because sports foods have the calorie, sugar, and fat content of candy bars. So unless you’re training for the ironman, stick to plain old water to rehydrate.

Here’s the 5-second test to know whether you’re eating because you’re truly hungry – or for emotional reasons. Simply ask yourself: “Am I hungry enough to eat steamed salmon right now?” If that doesn’t sound appealing, you’ve got a craving, not true hunger. That comes from nutritionist Melissa Hartwig. She says, since a boring protein doesn’t satisfy our typical cravings for sweet, salty or savory, it’s a dead giveaway. And if it IS just a craving, sip a mug of hot tea instead, which can help suppress the urge to eat.

If the salsa you ate was spicier than you anticipated… And now your mouth is on fire, what can you do?  Order something smothered in whipped cream, or head to the pantry and grab the Reddi-Wip. That’s because the burning sensation you’re experiencing is caused by capsaicin – a compound in peppers which bonds to taste receptors on our tongue. But there’s a protein in dairy – called casein – that counteracts capsaicin’s bonding power. And whipped cream contains MORE casein than any other dairy product! All you need is a spoonful to get relief.
