Skip the energy drinks, and drink some OJ, instead. Researchers in Korea gave tired office workers IVs filled with plain saline solution, or saline solution spiked with high doses of vitamin C. The result: The “C” receivers were less tired than those who got the placebo. The reason? Because “C” reduces oxidative stress, which contributes to fatigue.

Zinc. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University found that people who took zinc supplements had 40% fewer colds than those taking a placebo. Plus, the volunteers taking zinc who did end up with a cold, had a‑third fewer symptoms, and recovered as much as 3 days faster.

The reason? Because zinc prevents the cold virus from attaching to certain receptors inside our nose – which keeps them from invading our body and infecting our cells. So, get some zinc lozenges or supplements, and you’ll be much less likely to get sick.

Next time you’re on an airline flight, look around and count how many people order ginger ale. A bunch of ‘em, right? That’s because a lot of people know, and we’ve talked about it on this show, that ginger can relieve nausea and motion sickness. But the fact is, conventional ginger ale doesn’t contain any ginger… Or if it does, it’s trace amounts of ginger-concentrate, for flavoring. So it’s not providing the medicinal benefits. So then…why pick ginger ale?

Experts say it’s more likely the placebo effect at work. We believe it’s going to make us feel better, so it does. But really, any carbonated drink would make us feel better. According to neurobiologist Dr. E. Carstens from UC Davis, when the carbon dioxide bubbles pop on your tongue, they react with an enzyme on your taste buds to create carbonic acid. Like most acids, carbonic acid stings just a little, but it’s a good, fizzy sting. And Dr. Carstens says the mild pain makes your brain send feel-good endorphins into your bloodstream. So you do, in fact, feel better… And since we believe it’s the ginger doing the work, the feeling is enhanced that much more.

It will…IF you THINK it will! Medical experts call it the “no-cebo effect.” The opposite of the placebo effect – in which, if you think a pill will make you feel better, it will – even if it’s only a Tic-Tac in disguise. With the nocebo effect, if we expect negative symptoms, we can actually trigger them. That’s how powerful our minds are. So stop and think about whether your fears are realistic… So you can stop worrying yourself sick.

If you’re exhausted, and someone asks how you’re doing, lie and say, “I’m great!” Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic found that can actually trick your brain into thinking you DO feel great and rested. It’s called “placebo sleep”… and – just like taking a fake placebo pill fools us into feeling better – pretending you slept well is so effective, it can help you power through the day even when you’re short on sleep.
