What you wear on your next plane trip could be critical for keeping you and your fellow passengers comfortable and healthy.

For example, skip the heavy cologne and perfume. Travel expert Christopher Elliott says because of the re‑circulated air, your scent could permeate the entire aircraft, and overwhelm or even sicken your fellow passengers – especially young children and those with allergies.

Also: Don’t wear skinny jeans. They can constrict circulation and raise the chance of developing blood clots in your legs.

Just because you can’t smell your own perfume or cologne, doesn’t mean you need to spritz on more! Because we grow accustomed to our own scent and tune it out. It’s like being in a coffee shop for a while. You stop smelling the coffee. It’s called “odor fatigue.” And it happens because, once our brain identifies a smell as non-threatening, it ignores it. And that’s why you can’t tell how much fragrance you have on. If you want to start smelling yourself again, go au naturale for a week. You’ll be more in tune with your fragrance when you start wearing it again.

To prevent burning when you’re out in the sun (even in the winter)…

you need to do more than wear sunscreen. Make sure your body lotion is unscented – and skip the perfume and cologne. Because the chemicals in scented products make our skin more sensitive to UV damage. They’re called volatiles and solvents.
Volatiles are the chemicals that make a liquid airborne. Without this, no one could smell your favorite perfume unless their nose made direct contact with your skin.
Solvents are what hold those volatile fragrance notes in the product so they don’t separate out in the bottle. But both of those things make skin more vulnerable to irritation in general – and when you add UV rays into the mix, you can come home with a serious skin reaction and burn.

Smelling the right scent can help relieve nausea & motion sickness.

In a study conducted by the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, researchers showed study subjects a video designed to make them feel queasy. One group smelled rose oil – another smelled nothing. Well, the group that sniffed rose oil felt 50% less nauseous than the other group. The researchers say certain scents can conjure up powerful emotions. And if that emotional response is positive, it distracts the brain enough to ease motion sickness. And you don’t necessarily need rose oil. Any pleasant scent will do the trick. The researchers say you can start with your favorite cologne or perfume – which hopefully elicits a positive sensory response for you.

Your perfume can enhance your skin’s health if it contains sandalwood. According to the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, the smell of sandalwood activates pathways that make skin cells multiply……And that’s what happens when skin is healing, like if you have a cut. So if you’re looking to enhance skin renewal, it can’t hurt to try a fragrance with notes of sandalwood. And guys, that goes for you, too. There are plenty of men’s fragrances that contain sandalwood.

Do you suffer from headaches or even worse, migraines?

I’ve got a list of surprising headache triggers and helpful remedies.

Stressful relationships can trigger a headache. That’s because when we’re anxious, we tend to take shorter breaths, leaving us oxygen-deprived. Our body tries to compensate by constricting blood vessels…And that constriction can cause head pain. So, when you feel overwhelmed, try the 2-5-5-5 method: Take 2 minutes, and breathe in for 5 seconds, hold it for 5, then breathe out for 5.

Aromas. 1 in 50 headache sufferers are sensitive to specific “trigger smells”, like gasoline, tobacco, and perfume. If that’s you, carry a bottle of essential oils to sniff when you’re around trigger smells. Especially lavender, which has been shown to boost relaxation, or peppermint, which reduces pain.

A sunny day. According to the Northern California Headache Clinic, the glare of the sun bouncing off water, pavement, glass or snow interferes with the area of the brain that controls pain…Which can cause an instant migraine. So, try wearing sunglasses with polarized lenses, and putting them on before you step outside.
