Stick a bottle of mouthwash in your desk drawer, break room cubby, or on the counter!

According to the journal Appetite, when study subjects ate a bite or two of a favorite snack – then rinsed with mouthwash – they were less likely to go back for more. That’s because the mouthwash sweeps away the savory, salty, sweet, or fatty flavors lingering in your mouth, and the minty taste switches off your appetite.

Even just sniffing something minty can do the trick. A study found that people who sniffed the scent of peppermint every 2 hours weren’t as hungry as those who didn’t sniff mint, and consumed 400 fewer calories each day! The scent distracts the brain from thinking about food and even dials down hunger hormones.

The high-sugar foods we tend to eat all summer – like ice cream, popsicles, and Frappuccinos – can make us feel gassy and bloated. That’s because sugar feeds our intestinal bacteria and makes it multiply. The solution: Sip a glass of mint iced tea! Peppermint contains menthol, which stalls the growth of gas-producing bacteria. Mint also relaxes stomach muscles; it has an antispasmodic effect – which means it can relieve gas and cramping. In fact, UCLA scientists found that sipping a glass of mint tea after meals helped reduce stomach trouble for up to 69% of people tested.

Keep some peppermint essential oil on hand! German researchers found the smell relieves allergy symptoms as effectively as many over-the-counter decongestants and antihistamines. It’s down to the cooling menthol in mint, which relaxes arteries and muscles, and shrinks mucus membranes, making it easier to breathe! So, when your allergies flare up, add a few drops of peppermint oil to a pot of boiling water. Then, don’t burn yourself! But lean your head over the steam and inhale deeply for 5 minutes. Your sinuses should unclog in no time.

…when you can blast away pain with PEPPERMINT?

That’s from a new study in the journal Phytomedicine – which found that peppermint oil can soothe headaches as effectively as taking 3 extra-strength Tylenol.

Researchers say it’s down to the menthol in peppermint. Think of the way chewing minty gum makes you feel like you’re inhaling cool, winter air. Well, that same sensation from menthol is proven to also stimulate blood flow, relax muscles, and calm nerves in a way that relieves pain within 15 minutes!

So, how exactly does one “take” peppermint oil? Researchers recommend mixing 6 drops of oil with your favorite body lotion. Then, firmly massage the lotion into areas where you feel pain – like your forehead, temples, and neck.

It’s not surprising. According to Dr. Seth Marquit, the medical director at the Pritikin Longevity Center, any time you make a major dietary change – even if it’s healthy – it can throw off your system, and one side effect is headaches. Like if you cut out chocolate – or caffeine… both of which HELP head pain. The good news is, the headaches will be a short-term problem and should disappear once your body adjusts to the new eating plan. But in the meantime, here are a few natural ways to get rid of them.

First: Drink a glass of water. Headaches can be caused by dehydration. Once you’re adequately hydrated, your blood will flow more smoothly and the pain should subside.

Another natural headache cure: Pinch the spot between your thumb and index finger for 60 seconds. That’s an acupressure point that can relieve head pain.

Lastly, try aromatherapy – and take a whiff of an essential oil like eucalyptus, basil or peppermint. They all trigger a relaxation response.

This might sound weird, but it comes from the Annals of Emergency Medicine… They say, if you’re nauseous, smell some hand sanitizer. In studies, when people who were queasy smelled cotton pads soaked in isopropyl alcohol, they felt HALF as sick 10 minutes later. And isopropyl alcohol is a main ingredient in most hand sanitizing gels. It’s not the germ killing properties that do the trick – it’s simply the strong smell! Because peppermint oil and ginger oil worked just as well. But you’re more likely to have a tube of hand sanitizer nearby.

I’ve got a list of surprising headache triggers and helpful remedies.

Stressful relationships can trigger a headache. That’s because when we’re anxious, we tend to take shorter breaths, leaving us oxygen-deprived. Our body tries to compensate by constricting blood vessels…And that constriction can cause head pain. So, when you feel overwhelmed, try the 2-5-5-5 method: Take 2 minutes, and breathe in for 5 seconds, hold it for 5, then breathe out for 5.

Aromas. 1 in 50 headache sufferers are sensitive to specific “trigger smells”, like gasoline, tobacco, and perfume. If that’s you, carry a bottle of essential oils to sniff when you’re around trigger smells. Especially lavender, which has been shown to boost relaxation, or peppermint, which reduces pain.

A sunny day. According to the Northern California Headache Clinic, the glare of the sun bouncing off water, pavement, glass or snow interferes with the area of the brain that controls pain…Which can cause an instant migraine. So, try wearing sunglasses with polarized lenses, and putting them on before you step outside.

candy-caneGive you heartburn. Dr. Byron Cryer is a gastroenterologist in Dallas. And he says peppermint oil has been shown to relax the muscle at the opening of your esophagus, allowing food and acid to back up, and cause that telltale burning sensation. That’s why peppermint is actually good for nausea – it quells your stomach, but that relaxed state can cause acid to creep up your esophagus.
