It works even better than physical therapy! The American Academy of Pain Management had over 300 study subjects either do yoga or physical therapy once a week, for 3 months. Afterward, those doing yoga had 23% less pain! That’s because yoga strengthens the back and core muscles, plus the deep breathing and meditative quality of yoga makes the brain less sensitive to pain.

Before you pop a pill, try a massage, or low-impact exercise, like walking. Because boosting the flow of oxygen-rich blood can reduce inflammation, which helps cut pain. Those are new guidelines from the American College of Physicians. If your back is really hurting, start out slowly – walking for about 10 minutes once a day, for example. And gradually increase the time and distance until you’re getting at least 30 minutes of exercise on most days.

…even if they fall down the stairs! A study in the journal Sleep found 80% of sleepwalkers who injured themselves felt no pain and never woke up! And this goes WAY beyond bumping their head on something. One study subject jumped out of a third-floor window! Another fell off his roof and broke his leg! And neither knew what happened – or felt any pain – until they woke up. In the study, nearly half of all sleepwalkers reported injuring themselves while asleep – but only 10% woke up the moment they got hurt. Why is that? The researchers think sleepwalking switches off the neurons that send pain signals to the spinal cord and brain.

If you have 60-seconds, you can improve your health. Just do a plank! Dr. Sherry Pagoto is a professor of medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She says planks target your abs and lower back, strengthening your core and making your spine more stable. That’ll help you avoid injuries and pain. If you can’t hold a plank for a minute at first, try 20 seconds and work your way up.

That’s according to dermatology professor Dr. Tanya Kormelli from UCLA. She says sunburn is a result of damaged cells expanding, and leaking plasma and other inflammatory compounds. That’s why your skin gets red, puffy and painful… and from the minute you burn yourself, things will only get worse over the next 24 hours, which is when the inflammation is at full force. So protect yourself with a high numbered SPF sunscreen and wear protective clothing if you’re going to be out in the sun.

But some spots on the body are much more painful than others. So listen to this: Cornell University honeybee researcher Michael Smith has actually subjected himself to hundreds of bee stings. For several months, he started and ended each day with a sting on his forearm, which he designated as “average pain.” And then he tested out different body parts in between, while comparing the level of pain to his baseline, which was the forearm bee sting.

The result: The most-painful places to get stung by a bee, according to our expert, are: The nostril, the upper lip, your private parts, the palm of your hand, your cheek, and your armpit. And the least painful places for a bee sting are the top of the skull, the tip of the middle toe, upper arm, buttocks, and calf.

Have you ever seen someone else do something embarrassing and cringed, as if it was happening to you? There’s a name for it: Vicarious embarrassment. And it’s a sign you’re an empathetic person. Relationship therapist Dr. Sherry Amatenstein says, the more compassionate you are the more intensely you’ll feel other people’s embarrassment. And it has its root in the brain.
What happens is, two regions of the brain light up, one linked to empathy, one linked to pain. You may also start to sweat and blush. And it makes you feel as if what’s happening to the woman, who fell into the fountain while taking a selfie, could easily happen to you, too. It means you’re humble; you can put yourself in someone else’s shoes. You have vicarious embarrassment.

Do this to ease the pain: Cross your fingers. The journal Current Biology says crossing the injured finger over another can reduce the pain you feel. The researchers say it works because changing the position of your fingers fools the brain into feeling less pain.

If you want to try acupressure on yourself, here are tips from Janet Shaffer, from Duke Integrative Medicine:

For example: To kill nausea, press the inside of your forearm 3-finger widths up from your wrist. That’s the same spot targeted by motion sickness bracelets.

For a headache, pinch the webbed skin between your thumb and index finger.

And for gas or constipation, rub your abdomen in clockwise circles, 150 to 300 times.

Feeling stiff and achy?

Go outside and stand in the sun! Researchers at the University of Manchester found that getting as little as 60-seconds of sunshine can reduce chronic aches and pains as much as 20%. That makes it as effective as most over-the-counter pain relievers. The researchers believe the combination of warmth and natural light triggers your brain to produce a flood of pain-killing endorphins. Being exposed to UV-rays also triggers production of vitamin D, which has been shown to reduce pain from arthritis and muscle aches.

Got pain? Get 60-seconds of sun. It’s that simple, even in the wintertime.
