Don’t eat citrus fruit before a day in the sun! Because citrus contains compounds that make skin more vulnerable to UV light. A study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology followed 100-thousand people for 25 years. And skin cancer risk was highest in those who ate oranges and grapefruit daily, and lowest in those who ate it twice a week. But skin photosensitivity drops over time. So if you wait 4 hours after eating citrus to get some sun, you’ll cut your risk for skin cancer.

Kumquat isn’t just a fun word to say – these tiny orange fruits are great if you have a cold or flu. They contain bioflavonoids that enable your immune cells to fight back and react more quickly to viral invaders. According to research from UCLA, eating 3 kumquats a day can help you bounce back from a viral illness – like a cold or flu – 40% faster.

Experts say they’re usually caused from sitting or standing in one position for too long during the day. That can strain muscles in the calves, or lead to an electrolyte imbalance, which can cause muscle spasms. The solution is to eat things high in magnesium, potassium and calcium – all of which help relax muscles and nerves. So try foods that contain all 3, like sweet corn, summer squash, cherries, navy beans and oranges.

fruit-vs-candy

Nope! When the natural sugar, or fructose, is accompanied by the fiber in fruit, the combination helps slow digestion and keeps your blood sugar stable. But when it comes to candy and sweets, they’re made with refined sugar and high-fructose corn syrup. Those fly through your system, and the energy crash that follows leaves you craving more sweets. However, you have to eat fruit whole for the digestive slow-down to take effect.

Use the scent of orange to calm down.

Cops in Rotterdam, Holland, found that prisoners became less aggressive when the scent of oranges was pumped through their cells. Prison fights were dramatically reduced and they used 10% less sedation drugs.

So if you’re experiencing stress, or going into a stressful situation, peel an orange and take a deep whiff.
