On a day when you need to think positively, put on something orange. According to The Color Association of The United States, it’s an energizing color – because it’s between red, which increases adrenaline – but can also make you feel aggressive… and yellow, which promotes energy and social interaction – but can also exhaust the eye. So orange is the perfect in-between color. And looking at it will give you a mood boost and help get you through the day in a positive state of mind.

So, peel an orange, get a whiff of a citrus essential oil, or mix up a batch of lemonade. And be sure to breathe deeply.

Kumquat isn’t just a fun word to say – these tiny orange fruits are great if you have a cold or flu. They contain bioflavonoids that enable your immune cells to fight back and react more quickly to viral invaders. According to research from UCLA, eating 3 kumquats a day can help you bounce back from a viral illness – like a cold or flu – 40% faster.

How do you know which ones? It’s mostly the red and orange ones… Like tomatoes and carrots. Food science professor Dr. Mary Ellen Camire says those vegetables have tough cell walls that can lock in all the good stuff, like vitamins and minerals. But cooking helps break down those walls so we can absorb the nutrients more easily. So, remember, red and orange vegetables are healthier when cooked.

When you get stressed out, sniff an orange. The scent of oranges activates the same brain nerves that antidepressants and hormones do. Which can help us feel happier and less anxious in as little as two minutes.
