And the stronger your legs are, the stronger your memory will be. That’s according to research from King’s College London. They followed over 300 sets of twins between age 43 and 73. The result: After more than a decade, the twin with the strongest legs had 18% less age-related cognitive decline… Meaning, their brain was more than 3 years younger than the brain of the sibling who was less-active. The stronger twin also had more gray matter, and a measurable boost in activity in the area of the brain linked to memory.

The researchers believe it’s because physical activities that build leg strength, like walking, trigger production of human growth hormone, which helps repair brain cells and grow new ones.

Do this: Flex your arm muscles like you’re Arnold Schwarzenegger posing as Mr. Universe. A study in the Journal Of Consumer Research found people who clenched their biceps muscles while making food decisions were better able to resist junk food. The experts say, in our mind, we equate firm muscles with strength and self-control. So making like Arnold could get you over the cupcake hump.

Don’t save your core workout until the end of your exercise session. According to certified personal trainer Michael Wollpert, if you work your core at the beginning – like by doing planks – you’ll engage those muscles more for the rest of your workout. And that’ll help improve your balance all the way through, and help you maximize your effort.

Lift something weird. Most of the things we carry in everyday life aren’t the size of free weights. They’re odd-shaped things, like kids, suitcases, and shopping bags. So, to build strength that’s more than just for show, switch between sandbags, barbells and kettlebells. And lift yourself by doing pull-ups. In fact, pull-ups target more muscles than any other upper-body exercise. Those weighted exercises will build strength that helps you out in real life – like next time you have to carry a sleepy kid from the car to their bed.

First: Brew some chamomile tea – which contains compounds that can ease muscle spasms.
Then, kick back in a recliner, or on a pile of pillows with your head supported, to reduce the muscle tension in your neck and torso.
And apply a heating pad to your neck for 20 minutes. Physiology professor Dr. Charles Swanik at the University of Delaware says heat is relaxing…Plus, it increases blood circulation, which brings natural pain-relieving chemicals right to the sore spot.

The new go-to physical therapy tool is a lacrosse ball. Michelle Olson, professor of exercise physiology at Auburn University, says lacrosse balls are the perfect size and shape for pressing into muscle knots, and reducing inflammation. Just place a lacrosse ball – or a tennis ball – against the wall, and roll your sore spots back and forth on top of it – and in circles. It may hurt a little at first, but then your muscles should release.

If you’re having trouble motivating yourself to get to the gym – or go for a run – try this: Download an audiobook. A study from the University of Pennsylvania found that people went to the gym 50% more often when they had an audiobook to listen to.
And once you get to the gym, focus on exercises that use your legs. You’ll burn a lot more calories. That’s because our legs house the biggest muscles in our body – so working them increases our calorie burn.

Chiropractor Dr. Ryan Curda says it’s a mild addiction. Because it stretches the fingers and joints, and relieves pressure that builds up – triggering a pleasant feeling… Like the relaxation you get after a nice stretch. And when something feels good – we tend to repeat it… And we can get hooked on the feeling of relief and even the sound of the cracking itself.
The people who crack their knuckles the most tend to be people who use their hands for a living… Like writers, coders, surgeons, and artists. And physical therapist Dr. Scott Weiss says cracking the knuckles actually releases several pounds of pressure from the joints. Because, as you use your hands throughout the day, the muscles and joints tighten up.
And no, cracking your knuckles will NOT lead to arthritis. But over time, if you bend your fingers and hands to do the cracking, the cartilage in your joints can wear down. That’s why the safest and most effective way to release the gas in the joints you want to crack is to PULL them.

After a tough workout, have salmon for dinner. It’ll help with muscle soreness and tenderness. That’s according to sports physician Jordan Metzl. He says the omega-3 fatty acids in fish are anti-inflammatory. And just like they’re good for your heart – they’re good for your muscles, too.

To feel energized fast, add cilantro to your next meal. One tablespoon of fresh cilantro is enough to increase energy within 20 minutes. That’s because cilantro has properties that help our muscles and brain process glucose for fuel. The result is instant energy.
