Stick a bottle of mouthwash in your desk drawer, break room cubby, or on the counter!

According to the journal Appetite, when study subjects ate a bite or two of a favorite snack – then rinsed with mouthwash – they were less likely to go back for more. That’s because the mouthwash sweeps away the savory, salty, sweet, or fatty flavors lingering in your mouth, and the minty taste switches off your appetite.

Even just sniffing something minty can do the trick. A study found that people who sniffed the scent of peppermint every 2 hours weren’t as hungry as those who didn’t sniff mint, and consumed 400 fewer calories each day! The scent distracts the brain from thinking about food and even dials down hunger hormones.

If you’re traveling and don’t have any hand-sanitizer – an antiseptic mouthwash can sub for it in a pinch. So if you have one of those mini-travel-size bottles, just put a few drops on your hands and rub them together. The alcohol in the mouthwash will kill bacteria just like hand sanitizer.

Here’s a weird way to improve the health of your mouth… Put a drop of oregano oil on your toothbrush, with your toothpaste! Oregano oil is antimicrobial, antibacterial, and anti-parasitic. You can kill germs in your mouth by rubbing a couple drops on your gums, adding it to water to make a mouthwash, or putting a drop on top of your toothpaste, and brushing as usual.

Swish some minty mouthwash before your next run! That’s according to the Scandinavian Journal Of Medicine. They found that runners who gargled with minty mouthwash before exercising were able to go faster than those who drank an icy cold sports drink. The researchers think it works because the minty menthol makes you feel cool all over, psychologically. And that reduces feelings of dryness and thirst that can slow runners down. So maybe swig from a mini-bottle of mouthwash before your next 5K.

According to microbiologist Dr. Phillip Tierno, if you leave your toothbrush sitting out on the bathroom counter, it could collect bacteria from toilet flushes, which can travel up to 20-feet in most bathrooms.

That’s why Dr. Tierno recommends regularly running your toothbrush through the dishwasher! According to the American Journal of Dentistry, this method destroys nearly all disease-causing bacteria. Another option? Soak your brush in a mouthwash that contains cetylpyridinium chloride. You’ll find that in products like Crest Pro-Health. Then let it dry completely.
