Do you tend to feel nauseous from road trips, vacation food, or rising humidity?

Eat some fresh cantaloupe! According to research by the British Heart Foundation, it can calm your upset stomach in as little as 15 minutes. The reason? The melon’s distinct aroma helps quiet the brain’s nausea center. Cantaloupe also contains tons of beta-carotene, which reduces the stomach inflammation that can cause nausea by 20%.

If you’re going on a road trip, here’s a great tip for relieving motion sickness: Listen to some music. But make sure you’re the DJ in the car. In the study, only people that had control over which radio station to listen to – or which songs to play – got relief from their motion sickness.

If you don’t want to toss your cookies on an amusement park ride, do two things. This advice comes from amusement park expert Pete Trabucco, author of “America’s Top Roller Coasters.”

Open your eyes: Looking ahead helps your body adjust to dips, which makes for a smoother ride. That’s why it’s better to be in the front of the ride than the back. You can see what’s coming.

Also, bend in the opposite direction: For example, if the ride pitches you to the left, try to bend your body to the right. This’ll help prevent motion sickness.

What carbonated beverage do you choose when flying?

Why are people more likely to order ginger ale on a plane than on the ground? Some people think that’s because ginger is known to relieve nausea, like from motion sickness or anxiety. But the ginger ale on planes doesn’t contain any ginger… or if it does, it’s trace amounts of ginger concentrate for flavoring. So it’s not providing the medicinal benefits. So why pick ginger ale?

It’s more likely the placebo effect at work. We THINK it’s going to make us feel better, so it does. But really, ANY carbonated drink would make us feel better. Because, according to neurobiologist Dr. E. Carstens from UC Davis, when the carbon dioxide bubbles pop on your tongue, they react with an enzyme on your taste buds and create carbonic acid. Like most acids, the carbonic acid hurts a little, but it’s a good hurt because it makes your brain release feel-good endorphins.

A rose by any other name… can conquer your nausea. According to the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, smelling the right scent can help relieve nausea and motion sickness. In their study, participants watched a video designed to make them feel queasy. One group smelled rose oil – another group smelled the scent of leather – another smelled nothing.
Well, the group that sniffed rose oil felt 50% less nauseous than the other two groups. The researchers say certain scents can conjure up powerful emotions… And if that emotional response is positive, it distracts the brain enough to ease motion sickness. And you don’t necessarily need rose oil. ANY pleasant scent will do the trick. The researchers say you can start with your favorite cologne or perfume – which hopefully elicits a positive sensory response for you.

If you want to try acupressure on yourself, here are tips from Janet Shaffer, from Duke Integrative Medicine:

For example: To kill nausea, press the inside of your forearm 3-finger widths up from your wrist. That’s the same spot targeted by motion sickness bracelets.

For a headache, pinch the webbed skin between your thumb and index finger.

And for gas or constipation, rub your abdomen in clockwise circles, 150 to 300 times.

Next time you’re on an airline flight, look around and count how many people order ginger ale. A bunch of ‘em, right? That’s because a lot of people know, and we’ve talked about it on this show, that ginger can relieve nausea and motion sickness. But the fact is, conventional ginger ale doesn’t contain any ginger… Or if it does, it’s trace amounts of ginger-concentrate, for flavoring. So it’s not providing the medicinal benefits. So then…why pick ginger ale?

Experts say it’s more likely the placebo effect at work. We believe it’s going to make us feel better, so it does. But really, any carbonated drink would make us feel better. According to neurobiologist Dr. E. Carstens from UC Davis, when the carbon dioxide bubbles pop on your tongue, they react with an enzyme on your taste buds to create carbonic acid. Like most acids, carbonic acid stings just a little, but it’s a good, fizzy sting. And Dr. Carstens says the mild pain makes your brain send feel-good endorphins into your bloodstream. So you do, in fact, feel better… And since we believe it’s the ginger doing the work, the feeling is enhanced that much more.

Smelling the right scent can help relieve nausea & motion sickness.

Wear an over-the-counter acupressure wristband! The kind that helps motion sickness. A study found that insomniacs who wore an acupressure wristband fell asleep faster, slept more deeply, and woke up fewer times during the night. That’s because the same acupressure spot on the inner wrist that prevents motion sickness and nausea, also induces deep relaxation at night.
