Whether it’s a fern, English ivy or even a succulent, like aloe, being surrounded by greenery prompts an immediate mood lift, and lowers your risk of depression. According to the University of Michigan, our brains are naturally primed to release feel-good chemicals in the presence of nature, and it also triggers a relaxation response. Even when we’re stressed! Being near greenery also increases our ability to concentrate, makes us more productive, and boosts memory by 20%.

You don’t need to do crossword puzzles or play an instrument to get a brain boost. We can strengthen our neural connections with a 10-minute phone call with a friend. That’s long enough to start releasing the brain chemical, serotonin, which improves our mood and awakens our creative thinking. That’s because, during a conversation, we’re thinking about multiple things – what our friend is saying, what we’re going to say next, and predicting how our friend will respond. That involves both brain hemispheres, making our mind more flexible, and slows down brain aging.
To make it even better?
Have that 10-minute conversation while you’re walking. Talking while exercising lights up even more brain areas, making you a better problem solver, while improving overall cognitive health by increasing blood and oxygen flow to the brain.

Researchers at Loma Linda University had people watch a FUNNY 20-minute video or a neutral documentary. Those who saw the funny video performed better on memory tests. But you don’t even have to laugh out loud… because a genuine smile produces mood-boosting dopamine and endorphins. So the next time you need to perform well on a task – watch a video that makes you laugh or smile. As long as your smile is authentic – you’ll get the mood-boosting benefits.

Clip some coupons. Research from Claremont Graduate University found every time we see a good deal – and anticipate saving money – our brain gets a shot of feel-good oxytocin and dopamine – even if we never actually buy the item. That explains why researchers found clipping coupons, or visiting coupon websites, can trigger a 38% jump in happiness levels. Which is similar to the mood boost we get from receiving a gift.

If there’s a sports lover in your life – don’t get on their case for watching pre-season football, or following their favorite baseball or soccer team. And if you’re the sports fanatic – tell your partner to chill out. Because, according to a study, sports fans get a 50% spike in happiness when they watch their favorite teams compete. It’s because, even though we’re not playing ourselves, willing our team to win makes us feel as if WE’RE trying to win. And that gives us a surge of energy, a mood boost, and an extra dose of a certain self-esteem-building hormone.

If you need a mood boost – put down the cookie and pick up a piece of fruit! Research in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition shows that eating fruit will help you feel calmer and happier than if you eat cookies, candy or chips. That’s because fruit stimulates the release of the mood-boosting brain chemical serotonin. Plus, the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in fruit increase activity in the area of the brain that regulates mood. And choose a wide variety of fruit. Because different fruits contain different happiness-boosting compounds – so the more types of fruit you eat, the better you’ll feel.

Need a boost of happiness? Listen to music you love but haven’t heard in forever. According to the journal Science, forgotten musical favorites provide the biggest mood boost. That’s because they combine nostalgia AND novelty, which activates the brain’s reward centers better than either one alone.

If you can’t sleep? Skip the sleeping pill and TALK to your partner. You can even talk to a close friend on the phone. UCLA research found married couples reached the deepest restorative stages of sleep – and woke up better rested – when they took 5-minutes to talk before bed. Because when something’s bugging us, we can toss and turn all night. But talking helps ease our worries. Plus, discussing our feelings promotes bonding and boosts our mood. And it makes sense that if we go to bed happy, we’re more likely to wake up refreshed, compared to when we go to bed feeling bummed.

Want an instant mood boost? Head for the nearest farmers’ market! A study in the journal Neuron found just seeing all the displays of colorful fruits and vegetables, fresh-baked goods, and homemade pickles, jams, and cheeses will produce a spike in feel-good dopamine in your body. Add in the chance to chat with vendors and your fellow shoppers, and that’ll provide an instant mood boost, whether you’re buying, or just browsing. Wandering through a farmers’ market packed with fresh foods also encourages healthy eating habits.

So, if you want an instant mood boost, visit a farmers’ market! If there are no farmer’s markets in your area due to the cold weather try giving your local grocery store’s produce department a stroll.
