…if it’s less than 12 hours old. Scientists in Hungary put snow from parks and city intersections in sterile containers, and tried to grow bacteria and mold. The result: Fresh snow had hardly any bacteria. But after 2 days, the bacteria count exploded. Because snow collects pollution particles as it falls. And microorganisms grow exponentially as the snow gets older. So don’t eat snow more than 12 hours old.

Well, you may want to stick it in the dishwasher, because it’s one of the germiest things in your house! The product testing organization NSF International found most pet bowls contain things like yeast, mold, and bacteria like E.coli.

Most of us pet owners don’t think the bowls are a problem. But in a recent study, out of 30 items swabbed and tested from people’s homes, pet bowls ranked near the top of the list!

But things like salmonella and E.coli can fester in your pet’s bowl – making your pet very sick. And even if you accidentally touch the bowl or pick it up, it can make YOU horribly sick, too. The researchers say pet bowls should be washed daily. And if you feed your pet raw food, it should be washed after every meal. Also, the experts say get rid of any plastic bowls altogether. Because germs are more likely to hide and multiply in the cracks of plastic bowls – more so than in ceramic or stainless steel pet-food bowls.

You could be allergic to something under your own roof. For example:

Your fish tank. Having a fish as a pet is a good hypoallergenic option – but the tank can be harboring mold. So clean the tank and filter once a month.

Another allergy trigger? Your computer printer. They often emit volatile organic compounds and other particles that can trigger asthma and damage the lungs. So make sure your printer is at least 10 feet away from where you sit, and in a well-ventilated area.

Stop raking leaves! That’s because mold grows on fallen leaves, and stirring them up can release spores into the air you’re breathing – which can trigger an asthma attack. If you absolutely have to rake: Wear a surgical mask while you’re doing yard work.

If your home is prone to mold, put English ivy plants in several rooms. According to research from NASA, English ivy is particularly efficient when it comes to removing mold spores from the air. And inhaling mold can lead to headaches, nausea and breathing problems like asthma. But in a study, when English ivy was placed in a container with moldy bread, it destroyed 60% of the mold spores in 6 hours! And ALL the spores in 12 hours.

Does it smell like mildew? That means it’s growing enough mold to cause an allergic reaction. So get that towel into a washing machine, on hot with bleach, before you use it again. And when you shower, crack a window or turn on a vent. Moisture is fodder for mold, fungi and bacteria. But according to the University of Arizona, you can kill 90% of mold and bacteria in your bathroom simply by drying it out.

Well, according to pathology professor Dr. Romney Humphries from UCLA, those food spills grow thousands more bacteria than anything else that gets in your car. And although they’re unlikely to make you seriously ill from a stomach bug – the bacteria could create an explosion of allergy-triggering mold! So, vacuum your car at least once a month. And clean up spills and sticky fingerprints with anti-bacterial wipes. The top 3 places where germs live are the steering wheel, the door handles and the gearshift… All high-touch areas.

Pros: Dr. Natalie Dautovich from the National Sleep Foundation says we humans feel vulnerable in bed and while we’re sleeping… So having an animal nearby can make us feel more secure. Pets also lower our blood pressure and calm our nerves, so we have an easier time drifting off. Plus, if you’re single, snuggling up with a pet provides the same feel-good dose of oxytocin that we get from cuddling with a partner.

So what about the cons of sleeping with your pet? On the relationship front, animals create a physical barrier between you, so you’re less likely to kiss and cuddle each other – and more likely to cuddle your pet. That’s according to marriage and family therapist Dr. Kat Van Kirk. Plus, if you have allergies, you’re getting up close and personal for 8 hours with dirt, dander, pollen, mold and dust mites – all from your pet’s fur. Which can greatly increase your allergy symptoms.

If you’re prone to headaches, keep a few English Ivy plants in your home. Research at the University of Georgia found that the roots of English Ivy are teeming with millions of good-for-you bacteria… They work like natural air purifiers – and absorb 75% of mold and harmful chemicals. And cleaning up the air can cut your risk of headache by 25%.
