During the summer, we all spend more time outdoors in the hot sun, making us more likely to get dehydrated. Symptoms of dehydration include feeling tired, dizzy and thirsty. If that describes you, drink a glass of MILK – either dairy or soy – as soon as possible. According to the journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism, milk will rehydrate you faster than drinking water or a sports beverage. The reason? Because milk replaces fluid lost to sweat AND at the same time replenishes sodium, carbs and protein, which our body needs to operate properly. Again – the quickest way to get properly rehydrated is to drink a glass of soy or dairy milk, ASAP.

If you’re constantly exhausted, even when you sleep enough, you might need more B‑12! The vitamin boosts production of energizing and mood-boosting chemicals, like dopamine and serotonin. That’s why the two classic signs of low B‑12 are lack of energy and blue moods! But the best natural sources of B‑12 aren’t so popular: Like sardines, mackerel and organ meats, including liver and kidneys. So ask your doctor about taking a thousand-microgram supplement. That can reverse fatigue and cut your risk of depression in half within 3 weeks. You can also get B-12 from foods like beef, salmon, milk, fortified cereals and soy products.

…or played Frisbee and forgot to apply sunscreen… and now you’re a lobster. Here’s the first thing to do after you get a sunburn, according to dermatologist Joshua Zeichner from Mount Sinai Hospital: Grab cold SKIM or NON-FAT milk from the fridge, saturate a washcloth, wring it out, and apply it to your sunburn. That soothes because the milk coats your skin – instead of evaporating like water would – which helps repair the damaged outer layer. Milk protein also calms the skin and reduces inflammation, and skim or non-fat milk has more protein than whole milk. Out of milk? You can also use a cold compress of green tea to reduce inflammation.

Unless you have a problem with dairy, don’t swap your cow’s milk for almond milk. That’s the advice of registered dietician Jaclyn London. She says they both have the same number of calories, calcium and vitamin D… but almond milk can have extras you don’t need or want. Like artificial ingredients to make it taste creamier… and added sugar, to sweeten it. So stick with regular ol’ milk, unless you have lactose intolerance. And in that case, look for unsweetened almond milk…… or go for unsweetened soy milk, which has as much protein as skim dairy milk.

Which is better: Ice cream or gelato?

Ounce for ounce, gelato is better. It has fewer calories and less sugar than ice cream. Gelato also has half the fat of ice cream because it’s made with milk, not cream. That’s according to registered dietician Lauren Slayton. Plus, she says ice cream is less filling than gelato! Because it’s not as dense and has more air, so the flavor is less intense than gelato. That’s why people tend to eat MORE ice cream, while they’re likely to be satisfied with less gelato.

Fruit smoothies can cause dental erosion – which can lead to tooth sensitivity and wear away the enamel. In fact, when researchers exposed teeth to an hour’s worth of sipping a smoothie, the enamel weakened by nearly 40%! That’s because smoothies can be highly acidic. So switch to a smoothie with milk or yogurt in it, too. Because the calcium will help minimize the enamel-softening effects of the acid.

Do you live on protein shakes?

Drinking too many protein shakes can load you up with cancer-causing toxins like arsenic, lead and cadmium – the chemical used to make batteries.

We read about this study on the Consumer Reports website.

Store shelves are full of ready-to-drink protein shakes, and big canisters of protein powder. They’re all used to build muscle mass, get a fast energy fix or to replace meals. If you have a regular workout regime or you’re always on the go, these kinds of shakes can be a quick, easy way to pump yourself with protein.

But researchers say there’s poison along with the protein. Dr. Urvashi Rangan and a group of scientists tested 15 different types of protein shakes and found each one contained arsenic, cadmium, lead or mercury. In fact, drinking just 3 protein shakes a day can expose you to more of these metals than is safe to consume daily.

So if you live off protein shakes what can happen?

Once chemicals like arsenic or lead get in your body they metabolize and can stay in your system for a long time. They’re known to cause cancer, and lead can also damage your central nervous system, kidneys and blood cells.

And federal regulations don’t require protein drinks to be tested for contaminants.

So, what can you do to stay safe?

Eat your protein – don’t get it from a mix. A chicken breast, a glass of milk, and 2 scrambled eggs will give you more than enough protein for an entire day, over 60 grams.

What’s the difference between 1% and 2% milk?

It’s more than you think. Fat percentages of milk are based on weight, not calories. So two percent milk has way more than 2% of its calories from fat – it’s more like 35%. And one percent milk gets about 21% of its calories from fat. And skim milk? It gets zero calories from fat. Just something to think about the next time you run out to the store.

If you’re trying to lose weight, here are 3 foods that sound fattening, but could actually help you lose weight:

The first one is a staple in my kitchen: Peanut butter. A Harvard University study found that people who ate peanut butter twice a week lost more weight than those who didn’t. That’s because the monounsaturated fatty acids in peanut butter signal our digestive system to release a compound called O-E-A– which literally turns down our appetite, and turns up our metabolism.

Next are Dairy products. When we’re low on calcium, our bodies produce a hormone called calcitriol that triggers the production of fat cells. So, more of what we eat winds up on our waistline. And taking a calcium supplement isn’t the answer. Scientists still don’t know why, but people who have a glass of milk, or an ounce of low-fat cheese every day produce less fat-storing calcitriol than those who take calcium in pill form.

The last food that makes dieters smile: Chocolate… especially dark chocolate. Studies show that the food dieters crave most often, and most intensely, is chocolate. And since unsatisfied cravings lead to binge eating, occasionally indulging in chocolate can keep your eating in check, and leave you thousands of calories ahead. Just be sure to limit your serving size to one ounce… Which is equal to 6 Hershey’s kisses.

Are you giving someone a box of chocolate for the holidays?

Did you know white chocolate isn’t actually chocolate! It’s mostly made up of fat, milk and sugar. It contains none of the antioxidant-rich cocoa used in regular chocolate. So, stick with milk chocolate – or even better, dark chocolate, which contains the most antioxidants.
