If you regularly get less than 7 hours of sleep, it could be affecting your brain… and raising your risk for age-related memory decline, or Alzheimer’s! Research in HealthDay News says that’s because during sleep, our brain systems have a chance to sweep away plaque that blocks nerve signals, and triggers disease. But without adequate sleep, that clean-up process gets cut short, which can eventually lead to memory loss and overall cognitive decline.

Eat berries at least once a week!

Harvard Medical School researchers found that people who ate the most blueberries and strawberries had the slowest rate of memory loss… a difference equal to about two-and-a-half years of aging. But the biggest surprise was that all it took was a half-cup serving of blueberries or a 1-cup serving of strawberries per week. Better brainpower from berries.

Eat more avocado! Research at East Carolina University found avocados contain high levels of vitamin K and pantothenic acid… a nutritional one-two punch that improves communication between neurons, and boosts production of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which boosts focus. After eating just half an avocado a day for a week, your risk of brain fog and memory lapses will be cut in half.

peanut butter and grapes-wp

Preventing memory loss as we age may be as simple as eating peanut butter and red grapes for lunch, or drinking a glass of red wine with dinner. Resveratrol – an antioxidant compound in red grapes and peanuts – has already been shown to improve heart health… And new research in Scientific Reports shows it improves spatial learning and memory, too. In fact, resveratrol may even be able to boost the brainpower of people with severe neuro-degenerative conditions, like Alzheimer’s disease. So, have a peanut butter sandwich at lunch – and red grapes as a snack.
