Experiences vs Possessions

Here’s a great explanation from Psychology Today for why experiences make us happier than possessions: Because the experience becomes part of our identity. It becomes the story you tell, the memory you have, and something that can even influence your personality – like if you discover something in another culture that really inspires you. And the memories from an experience get rosier over time, but possessions LOSE value. And let’s face it. When someone asks for your life story – you’re more likely to tell them about the trip you took to Sri Lanka that changed your life, than the cool car you owned 10 years ago.

Are things in your house bumming you out?

You may not even be aware of it, but psychologist Dr. Susan Bartell says YES! Here are a few of the things that can bring you down – and what to do about them.

#1: Family heirlooms. Dr. Bartell says we feel guilty getting rid of them because they’re supposed to hold memories. But instead, they can weigh us down emotionally and cause physical clutter. So, Dr. Bartell says, let those things go. Ask another family member if they want it. If not – and it’s not “Antiques-Roadshow”-worthy – get rid of it.

What else could be bumming you out in your own home? Heavy drapes! Their physical weight and the way they block light can make a home feel old, sad, and tired.

Finally, old paperwork can make us depressed. It’s a constant reminder of bills and obligations. So shred anything you don’t need, and make a point of filing things away. That way, the sight of paperwork won’t drag you down emotionally.

Go stand in the sun!

According to research from the University of Arizona, exposure to the sun’s blue light rays increases your brain’s ability to process information… guaranteeing it’ll get stored in your long-term memory. It activates the hippocampus; that’s the part of the brain that stores memories.

So, the next time you need to commit something to memory, head outside, and stand in the sun for a few minutes while you mull it over. You’ll cement it in your memory banks.

Here’s an easy way to make special memories last longer – whether it’s a vacation, a wedding, or anything else. Actively tell yourself, “I want to remember this.” Then get into the moment – really soaking it up with your senses, NOT your smartphone. Because research from Penn State University says the more ways you give your brain to remember an event, the easier it’ll be to recall down the line, and the more likely you’ll recall the positive emotions linked to it.

Dr. Jeff Brown is the author of The Winner’s Brain. He says gesturing improves your ability to recall a conversation. In fact, it’s especially effective to “air write” something you want to remember – like the milk you need to pick up, or a phone number. The hand movements encode your memories in a different way than verbal cues – improving your recall.

Having a lazy weekend may backfire!

Because having a jam-packed weekend feels precisely 6 hours and 19 minutes longer than one spent on the sofa. That’s because we measure time by packing in memories – so the more we do, the longer the weekend seems.

Neuroscientist Dr. Jack Lewis says, when we think back on our weekend, if a lot of memories come to mind, it feels more fulfilling. But if someone asks you – ‘How was your weekend?’ and you draw a blank, it’ll feel like it was shorter and less fulfilling.

Thanksgiving is almost here. So, what are the benefits of giving thanks?

First: Giving thanks improves your physical health. People who keep gratitude journals tend to exercise an average of 33% MORE each week, and sleep 30 minutes more each night…That’s the word from psychology professor Dr. Robert Emmons. He says people who keep these journals also report more energy and vitality. The theory is that people who are aware of the blessings they already have in their lives don’t take their health for granted. They want to maintain their health and improve it. They’re also better at managing stress, which improves their health.

And another reason to GIVE THANKS: It helps you cope with trauma. Painful memories are less likely to surface for people who are grateful – and they’re less intense when they do. Because if you’re focused on what’s good in your life right now, you’re better able to deal with negative emotions from your past.

Are you having a get together this weekend?

Hanging out with old friends and reminiscing is good for your brain. That’s because it requires you to tap into your long-term memory. In fact, re-living happy memories is a proven way to lower your risk of dementia – plus it gives your mood a boost.
