It comes from Bob Roth, one of the most experienced and sought-after meditation teachers in North America.

Here’s what to do:

Place 3 fingers of your left hand on your right wrist and find your pulse.

Then, let both hands rest in your lap.

Close your eyes.

Focus on the feeling of your pulse.

Allow your thoughts to come and go, not focusing or dwelling on them.

After a minute, you’ll feel more relaxed – and you’ll be less likely to reach for food to self-medicate your stress.

A lot of us blow off steam by posting rants online about everything from traffic… to bad customer service… to a roommate’s dirty dishes. But Ohio State research shows writing a rant – or just reading one – makes us even angrier. Because we’re stuck on the negative. And people who regularly rant online are more prone to anger in real life, too… and tend to engage in more negative and rage-driven behaviors, like reckless driving. So, find a better way to blow off steam – like swimming, or meditation.

You do! Because all you need is 16 SECONDS a day to alter your brain! Yale University researchers found meditation decreases activity in the brain area responsible for negative thoughts, and a wandering mind – which is typically linked to ruminating, worrying about the past and future, and being less happy. But meditation keeps you focused in the present. It also physically changes the brain. It increases brain cell volume in the hippocampus, which regulates emotions. And decreases it in the amygdala, which is responsible for fear, anxiety, and stress.

And all you need is 16 SECONDS a day – as long as you’re consistent! So breathe in for a count of 4… hold it for 4… exhale for 4 seconds… and pause for 4. Done.

…feel free to plop down on the couch and watch TV. A joint study between UC Santa Barbara and the University of Georgia found people’s stress hormones were slashed after watching their favorite shows. Sure, meditation and yoga can also help stress levels – but unless you’re really into those things, feeling the pressure to do something “healthy” can prevent your stress levels from dropping. So, if you have certain TV shows you’re really into – don’t feel guilty – enjoy! Because getting absorbed in the plot and characters takes your mind off your own stresses and turns your focus outward.

Start meditating! The Cleveland Clinic says stress can cause your hair to thin. Because stress-related hormone fluctuations in the body accelerate balding and thinning by making the follicles age faster. So do something to reduce stress, like meditation, or tai chi. Men who do that regularly have 42% less cortisol coursing through their bodies, and are more likely to keep their hair.

When it comes to medical spending – which costs us more: Conditions related to stress – or obesity? Would you believe medical spending is TWICE as high for stress-related issues? According to the American Institute of Stress, U.S. businesses spend $300 billion dollars a year on health issues linked to stress, from high blood pressure, to back problems, to sleep disorders! Obesity has its own vast set of problems. But we could save a lot of money if we could get our stress under control. Meditation anyone?

Here’s another reason to roll out your yoga mat: It could keep you from catching a cold or the flu! Sports medicine physician, Dr. Jordan Metzl says yoga’s slow, controlled movements trigger an anti-inflammatory response in the body. And in a study, people who practiced yoga 4 times a week for 3 months improved their immune function and increased their antioxidant levels.

If meditation isn’t your thing, but you need to chill out, go to an aquarium – or even a fish supply store! Because watching fish swim is calming and can improve your mood. Scientists measured the heart rates and blood pressure of people before and after visiting an aquarium… and they found that afterward, people had significantly lower readings and felt more relaxed. And the effects lasted for hours.

A lot… in not a lot of time.
For example: It increases alpha and theta brain wave activity – which leaves you in a state of relaxed wakefulness.
Twice-daily meditation sessions have also been proven to lower blood pressure naturally.
Plus, meditation can help reduce symptoms of psoriasis – by controlling the output of the stress hormone, cortisol.
And that reduction in cortisol means daily meditation makes us less likely to retain belly fat, too.
