Do you have someone in your family you always butt heads with? No matter what’s being discussed – or what the situation is – they find a reason to get mad. Clinical psychiatrist Dr. Mark Goulston says what they have is called “impotent rage.”

It’s anger that results from feeling powerless. They feel like they don’t have control over their life, so they lash out at whoever is around. Or they feel they were dealt a bad hand in life – so they take out their feelings of frustration on others. So how can you deal with them? Listen to them. Really try and understand what they’re saying and rephrase it back to them. Once they feel like they’ve been heard, they’ll calm down. Because it makes them feel they’re being treated fairly.

Being angry can increase your odds of having a heart attack up to 14-fold for up to two hours after an argument. And studies show that people who can’t control their temper are more prone to thickened arteries, which can be an early sign of heart disease and stroke risk. That’s why Duke University researchers say control your temper and you could control your heart.

Ladies, if you want to live longer, and reduce your risk of depression and irritable bowel syndrome – don’t keep your lips zipped when you’re fighting with your partner. Chronic disease expert Dr. Elaine Eaker conducted a 10-year study. And she found that women who forced themselves to keep their mouths shut during arguments were 4 times more likely to die during the study – compared to women who expressed themselves freely. That’s because swallowing your anger, frustration and disappointment can lead to chronic stress – which can trigger everything from high blood pressure, to heart disease, strokes, and even cancer.

When you’re driving, and someone makes a bone-headed move, honks, or cuts you off – do you turn into the Hulk and get road rage?

Well, you might want to practice forgiveness and take deep breaths, instead. Researchers at Australia’s University of The Sunshine Coast put study participants into driving simulators that measured heart rate, blood pressure, and anxiety levels – and had them encounter a variety of drivers… from polite and considerate ones, to aggressive and distracted ones.

The result: when participants drove alongside rude, aggressive drivers – who cut them off, tailgated and honked – their blood pressure spiked. They also became more aggressive and distracted, had more near-crashes with other cars and pedestrians.

They were also more likely to miss a turn, and drive off the road.

And research from MIT shows the stress of road rage can last for your entire commute – and beyond. And that kind of chronic stress boosts blood pressure – and raises your risk of heart disease within 6 years. So forgive bad drivers – for your heart’s sake.

If someone upsets you – you have two choices: You can either fly off the handle – or let it go. Here’s why researchers say you should let it go…

•In a recent study, people who frequently fought or became enraged had double the risk of death from all causes.

•Meanwhile, letting things go is linked with better blood flow and a more efficient heartbeat.

That’s not to say that an occasional argument is going to kill you. But turning the other cheek may ultimately make you healthier.

Ladies, if the man in your life upsets you – speak up!

Women who avoid conflict with their spouses by keeping their feelings bottled up are 4 times more likely to die from ANY cause than women who express their feelings. That’s because emotional strain wears you down mentally and physically.

We’re more likely to feel angry when we’re hungry…

like a cranky baby. It’s all chemical – because not eating for a while can cause levels of the happy hormone, serotonin, to drop. That makes it more difficult to regulate our emotions. So, to stay on an even keel, never get to the point where you’re absolutely famished.
