If you’re feeling down, hit your favorite sushi place or the grocery store and get some edamame. For those who don’t know, edamame is the fancy Japanese name for soybeans in the pod. And research shows they’re ideal for soothing stress. Because edamame beans are loaded with an amino acid called tyrosine, which helps increase the brain’s production of dopamine – the neurotransmitter associated with producing a feeling of calm. In fact, one study found that a single serving of edamame can lower our stress for at least 2 hours! It also has a high magnesium content – which helps relax muscles.

You’re probably less stressed than most. Yale researchers found that acts of kindness – as simple as holding the door for someone, or bringing in the trash barrels for your elderly neighbor – can make you calmer and happier, immediately and long-term. In their study, the researchers found when we help others, it gives us a sense of purpose and puts our own troubles into perspective.

Here’s a way to lower your blood pressure that has nothing to do with diet and exercise: Be generous! According to the University of British Columbia, people who spent money on someone else had a lower blood pressure than those who spent the same amount of money on themselves. And the blood pressure results were as big as the benefits of eating a healthy diet and exercising! So why does the way we spend have that effect? The researchers say generosity makes us feel socially connected. And feeling closer to people lowers stress and blood pressure.

Take pride in what you accomplished since you woke up! Psychologists say taking a moment before bed to consider what made that day special reinforces the positives, which lowers stress, boosts moods, and can improve sleep. And taking another moment to plan ahead, and consider what you might do tomorrow that will also make you proud – can set you up for even greater success. And give you even MORE mood-boosting blessings to count the following night.

In fact, according to the Human-Animal Bond Research Initiative, 87% of doctors say their patients’ moods improved as a result of owning a pet.

A study in PLOS One found that people who did kind acts – like holding the door for someone, or giving a friend a small gift – had lower heart rates and less stress. Because being kind and generous releases waves of calming brain chemicals that boost our mood and our health.

You don’t have to drink coffee to get energized. Just stand near the coffeemaker while it’s brewing. Because coffee is one of the most stimulating scents for our brain. The scent of coffee beans contain compounds that activate genes that help wake us up and lower our stress…Without taking a sip.

If you have exercise-induced asthma – where you cough, wheeze or have shortness of breath only while exercising – pop a vitamin C beforehand next time. 20% of people who DON’T have regular asthma have trouble breathing during exercise – especially in cold or dry air. If that’s you, taking a-thousand milligrams of vitamin C an hour before spin class will help keep your airways open. That’s because vitamin C relaxes blood vessels and lowers stress hormones – both of which can help airways stay open.

Here’s how you can do it. Spend time with the people you love! An analysis of more than a hundred different studies found that having a strong and active social circle reduces our risk of serious illness by nearly 80%. That’s because the comfort and support we get from spending time with people we care about lowers levels of damaging stress hormones, and strengthens our immune system.
