It’ll make you BOTH happier. That’s according to a new study from the University of Toronto. The researchers found couples that spend time hugging, holding hands, and touching each other lovingly are MUCH happier in their relationships and in life. The reason? Because physical contact triggers production of feel-good chemicals, especially the bonding hormone oxytocin, which makes couples feel closer, and has been shown in numerous studies to boost happiness.

That’s love. Dr. Brian Hare founded the Canine Cognition Center at Duke University – and he says, when your dog gives you eye contact, she’s quote, “hugging you with her eyes.” Because it triggers the release of the bonding hormone oxytocin – the same hormone that helps mothers and babies bond. If you want to test this out, try to naturally maintain eye contact when you’re interacting with your dog and see how she responds. But only do this with your own dog. A strange dog may consider eye contact aggressive.

There’s a scientific reason you hold your partner’s hand to express love, or your child’s hand when they’re scared: Because skin-to-skin contact produces the bonding hormone oxytocin. Psychologists at DePauw University say skin contact also causes a calming drop in blood pressure and heart rate in BOTH of you. So, next time you need to feel calmer or happier or think a loved one does, grab their hand and give it a squeeze.

Listen to the pitch of his voice for a clue. When guys are smitten, their voices get lower when they’re speaking with the object of their affection. That’s the latest finding from Albright College. They found that men will lower their voices around women they find attractive to try and entice them, subconsciously, with their masculinity.

Don’t reheat your to-go cup of coffee in the microwave until you transfer it to a ceramic mug. The Environmental Working Group says a lot of paper to-go cups are lined with a chemical that may release harmful compounds when microwaved. And doing that a lot could mess with your hormone levels. So if you find yourself reheating your to-go coffee every day – pour it into a mug first, just to be safe.

For an instant happiness boost: Gaze into your dog’s eyes. It floods your brain with oxytocin, the feel-good cuddle hormone… and it does the same for your dog. That strengthens your bond and makes you both happier.
This may work with cats and other animals too! Try it and let me know.

Text a friend or loved one! Researchers at Loma Linda University found that regular text message conversations with friends and family are a huge mood booster. That’s because having support and encouragement at our fingertips triggers production of mood boosting brain chemicals. In fact, regularly sending and receiving text messages helped 72% of adult women feel less sad and overwhelmed.

People who get hugged daily are less likely to get sick. That’s according to research from Carnegie Mellon University – which found that hugs boost the immune system. What’s the connection? The physical contact and social support that go along with hugging both reduce stress. And when our stress is lower – our immune system is stronger.

Cuddle up with someone you love. And yes – pets count! Just 10 minutes of cuddle time has been proven to boost production of the calming brain chemical oxytocin – which can help you relax, while reducing heart rate and blood pressure.

There’s a significant health benefit to having grandkids! Research by University of Chicago psychologist John Cacioppo shows that having grandchildren helps keep our thinking sharp. Because it takes a lot of flexibility and mental energy to look after a highly-active child. And being forced to think on our feet is one of the best ways to stave off dementia.
