Taking a day off! Longevity researcher Dan Buettner found that Seventh Day Adventists tend to live longer than average. Because they encourage their congregation to totally switch off one day a week, and spend the day resting and reconnecting with loved ones. So no texting, no TV, no work. The day off gives the brain time to reset itself and reduces stress levels, which has been proven to improve health, and increase longevity.

Here’s some good news for people who love to read. Reading books may add a couple more years to your life! That’s according to researchers at Yale University’s School of Public Health.

The researchers studied nearly 4‑thousand people over a span of 20 years. What the Yale team found was that older adults who were regular book readers lived an average of 2 years longer than their non-reading peers – or those who read only magazines and newspapers.

In the study, older adults who spent an average of 3-and-a-half hours reading books per week had a nearly 20% lower risk of dying over the next 12 years – compared to non-book-readers.

The Yale study also showed it doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor, male or female. The benefit of living longer was the same.

So what is it about book-lovers that boosts their longevity? Researchers say, because books are more in-depth, and the characters and plot are more involved, they engage the mind more than newspapers and magazines. That leads to cognitive benefits that positively affect longevity. The bottom line: Reading books prolongs your life!

That’s from a 14-year study on over 6,000 adults. Each participant was asked about their emotional state, the quality of their relationships, and to rate statements like: “Some people wander aimlessly through life, but not me.” The result: Every person who died during the study scored the lowest in purposefulness. Psychologist Dr. Patrick Hill says setting long-term goals can help you live longer, no matter how old you are when you discover what gives your life meaning. So, find a goal, whether it’s learning a new sport, volunteering, or traveling – and get cracking!

If you want to live at least two years longer – or more – eat plenty of fish! That’s the gist of research from the Harvard School of Public Health… which found the Omega-3 fatty acids in fish lower our risk for heart disease, depression, asthma, Alzheimer’s and more. The types of fish with the most Omega-3s include salmon, albacore tuna, lake trout, herring, and mackerel. And the researchers recommend eating at least two servings a week.

If you want to live a longer, healthier life – make two friends and call them frequently! Researchers at Brigham Young University analyzed 150 studies and found that people with a strong social support network – meaning, they had a circle of close friends –saw measurable decreases in blood pressure, plus improved immunity… Which decreased their chances of dying from any cause by a whopping 50%. And the researchers say that’s just as big a boost in survival as quitting a pack-a-day cigarette habit.

Having friends at work can increase the odds of a longer life by 140%!
That’s because having people we can count on for emotional support during the 8 hours we’re on the clock lightens our mental load. And when we’re less stressed and have people we can talk to about our problems, or just share a laugh with, it improves our overall health.

The average person sits for at least 8 hours a day – or more than 50 hours a week. That’s according to Vanderbilt University. The cost of all that sitting-down-time? When you’re sitting, your body undergoes a metabolic slowdown. You use less blood sugar for energy, and you burn fewer calories. Sitting also decreases the activity of an enzyme that eliminates fat in the blood.
The worst part? Even regular exercise won’t protect you. You have to take frequent walking or standing breaks during your 8 hours of sitting to offset it. Ultimately, spending more time of your feet means a longer life.
