Do you frequently wake up with a charley horse – or cramp – in your calf in the middle of the night? Next time it happens, try relaxing your leg, and pinching the fleshy area between your nose and upper lip with your thumb and index finger for 30 seconds. According to acupressure practitioners, that’s called an “acu-pinch.” And activating that area boosts circulation in your lower extremities, which can get you past the charley horse faster.

That’s the gist of research by the Mayo Clinic. Which found that night owls eat about 550 extra calories a day – mostly junk food between the hours of 10PM and 4AM. That’s because night owls tend to sleep about 80 minutes less per night than early birds… which messes with their hunger and “I’m full” hormones – making them more likely to overeat.

Do you play video games late at night?

Why aren’t you able to sleep? Because you play video games at night to unwind. The blue light from screens can disturb your sleep. So can intense, interactive video games – like Call of Duty – which stimulate the brain, and boost production of stress hormones, like adrenaline – making it nearly impossible to wind down and drift off. And nearly half of all gamers are women – so it’s not just a guy thing.

Avoid these late night delights – unless you didn’t want to sleep.

Here’s a quick list of foods sleep doctors say to avoid before bedtime – otherwise, they’ll keep you wide awake all night:

•First: Obviously anything with caffeine. Like soda, coffee, and chocolate – even coffee and chocolate ice cream. Would you believe a scoop of coffee ice cream has more caffeine than a can of cola or a cup of tea? Also, caffeine can linger in your system for up to 14 hours! And can increase the number of times you wake up at night, and decrease the total amount of sleep you get.

•Another food to avoid at bedtime? French fries – or anything fried and fatty. Research shows that high-fat foods push your digestive system into overdrive. Which can keep you awake.

•Finally, avoid really spicy foods. It’s not because they cause heartburn. It’s because they increase your core body temperature – and we need our body temperature to drop to achieve quality sleep.

Got the urge for a late-night snack? Stop and think first.

Here’s something to keep in mind when a late-night snack attack strikes. The food we eat fuels the hours ahead…Not the hours that have passed. So even if you haven’t eaten all day – and you make a big plate of pasta at 9pm at night – unless you’re staying up and being active for the next 5 or 6 hours, you won’t burn as much of it for fuel and you’re more likely to gain weight. So we want to do the majority of our eating when we’re active…That way, we’ll process the food we eat most efficiently. So when you eat, matters as much as what you eat.
