This may be the most fun way to improve your immune system: Kiss your partner! According to the journal Microbiome just 10 seconds of French kissing can transfer 80 million germs from one person’s mouth to another’s. Yes that’s a lot of microorganisms, but the health benefits are huge. Because when we’re exposed to other people’s germs, it helps us build immunity to those germs.

If you’re healthy – and your dog is, too – it’s okay to accept doggy kisses. Jan Bellow is president of the American Veterinary Dental College… and she says your dog’s mouth is teeming with bacteria, but her lick’s essentially harmless if you’re both in good health. But keep her from licking any cuts or scrapes. And if her breath could peel paint – avoid her kisses. Because that’s a sign of gum disease, and that bacteria can transfer to you.

Kiss your partner! According to the journal Microbiome, just 10 seconds of kissing can transfer 80 million germs from one person’s mouth to another’s. It sounds gross, but the health benefits are huge. Because when we’re exposed to other people’s germs, it helps us build immunity to those new germs. In fact, kissing could help protect a couple’s future babies from being infected in utero from viruses.

Pros: Dr. Natalie Dautovich from the National Sleep Foundation says we humans feel vulnerable in bed and while we’re sleeping… So having an animal nearby can make us feel more secure. Pets also lower our blood pressure and calm our nerves, so we have an easier time drifting off. Plus, if you’re single, snuggling up with a pet provides the same feel-good dose of oxytocin that we get from cuddling with a partner.

So what about the cons of sleeping with your pet? On the relationship front, animals create a physical barrier between you, so you’re less likely to kiss and cuddle each other – and more likely to cuddle your pet. That’s according to marriage and family therapist Dr. Kat Van Kirk. Plus, if you have allergies, you’re getting up close and personal for 8 hours with dirt, dander, pollen, mold and dust mites – all from your pet’s fur. Which can greatly increase your allergy symptoms.

Will these things make you sick?

Let’s start with kissing. The good news is, most viral infections seep in through your nose and eyes, not your mouth. In fact, the Journal of Infectious Diseases says only 8% of people typically get sick after smooching someone who has a cold. It’s actually safer to kiss someone with a cold than to shake their hand – and then rub your nose.

So, will staying in a hotel make you sick? You bet. If the person staying in the room the night before you was sick – a third of hotel room surfaces will be coated in illness-causing germs. That’s according to the University of Virginia School of Medicine. So, bring some sanitizing wipes and get to work on the light switch, TV remote, doorknobs and phone. Those areas are the least likely to be cleaned by housekeeping.

Do you need to toss your toothbrush after you’ve had a cold or flu? Nope. You can’t re-infect yourself. When you get sick, your immune system cranks out antibodies specific to the strain of virus you have. And those antibodies stick around to make sure you don’t get the same thing twice.

30 minutes of kissing can improve allergy symptoms. Research shows that kissing reduces the amount of chemicals your body releases in response to allergens. So smooch away!
