Visualize the ingredients in it! For example, if you want to avoid sugary soda, visualize 10-cubes of sugar in that one drink. Or, if a candy bar sounds tempting, picture test tubes filled with emulsifiers or preservatives, like tertiary butyl hydroquinone. According to Dr. Mehmet Oz, when we SEE what we’re considering consuming, we’re much less likely to want it.

Being sleep-deprived makes us hungrier, because we need extra calories to power through our day. According to King’s College London, if we get fewer than 6 hours of sleep, the next day we scarf down nearly 400 additional calories – usually junk food. Because a lack of sleep throws off our hunger hormones, making them spike. And since a lack of sleep makes us moody and irritable, we tend to reach for high-fat, high-calorie foods to make us feel better.

We know this to be true: The more junk food we eat, the more we crave. Because we get addicted to the combination of sugar, salt and fat. Also, junk food is typically highly processed. So it goes through our system like lightning – causing a blood sugar spike, followed by a crash – that makes us crave more junk to get our energy up again.

Well, we’re just finding out that cravings for healthy food work in a similar way. According to the Human Nutrition Research Center at Tufts University, when people followed a healthy eating plan, they actually started preferring healthier foods. Brain scans were done on study participants before the study – and again 6 months later. And the subjects on the healthy eating program showed reduced activity in the reward center of the brain when they were shown images of junk food… and they had increased brain reward activity when they saw healthy foods, like grilled chicken. The experts say, it’s a conditioned response and we can reverse our cravings by repeatedly exposing ourselves to better foods.

Eating one piece of fruit could help you eat healthier all week. If you eat it right BEFORE you go grocery shopping! Researchers from Cornell University found shoppers who had eaten an apple beforehand bought 28% more produce than cookie-eaters. They also bought less junk food. The explanation is simple: Once you eat a healthy snack, your subconscious guides you to STAY on a healthy path, with almost zero effort. But remember, the trick only works if you eat fruit right BEFORE you shop.

That’s the gist of research by the Mayo Clinic. Which found that night owls eat about 550 extra calories a day – mostly junk food between the hours of 10PM and 4AM. That’s because night owls tend to sleep about 80 minutes less per night than early birds… which messes with their hunger and “I’m full” hormones – making them more likely to overeat.

Is it 25, 75, or over 200? It’s over 200! Roughly around 230 food-based decisions a day. That’s according to psychologist Susan Albers, the author of “Eat Q” – like I.Q. And all those food decisions are hurting us – because we only have a limited amount of willpower to resist the fries, and go with the quinoa! So it’s best to take some of those decisions off the table. If you plan out your lunches every week – and stick to a shopping list at the market – you’ll make some of those decisions automatic, freeing up your willpower for when you really need it.

If so, you’re a lean, mean, fat burning machine. Researchers from Denmark found runners who logged about 3 miles a week lost an average of 4 pounds in a year – while keeping their diet exactly the same. BUT, runners who also cut back the usual suspects – soda, snacks and junk food – lost 12 pounds on average. And notice I said “cut back” – they didn’t have to drop those fun foods entirely. So lace up your running shoes, do 3.1 miles a week, and you’re guaranteed to lose weight.

You’re just bored. That’s the result of research from the University of Central Lancashire in the UK. They conducted two experiments to see how boredom affects people’s food choices.
In one study, people were asked to list their favorite foods, healthy and unhealthy – and then they had to complete a really boring task. Afterward, when asked what they wanted to eat from their lists, they overwhelmingly chose things like chips, sweets and fast food.
In a second experiment, people were offered a variety of healthy and unhealthy snacks while watching either a boring video or a funny one. Those who watched the boring video ate a lot more unhealthy snacks.
The researchers say this shows we crave fatty and sugary foods when we are bored. And they believe boredom is related to low levels of the uplifting brain chemical dopamine. So people crave fatty, sugary foods to activate more dopamine…
So if you want to cut down on your snacking and unhealthy food choices – don’t let yourself get bored!

Studies show that we’re more likely to binge on unhealthy food after a big accomplishment or win. In fact, a study in the Journal of Consumer Research found that pride can override our self-control – and we reward ourselves with bad-for-you foods.
