How can you avoid getting a bruise? Grab a black tea bag, soak it in warm water – not boiling – then hold it against the spot for 5 minutes. The tannins in the tea will soak into your skin and constrict the blood vessels, reducing swelling and inflammation. And if you DO get a bruise anyway, it’ll be less visible and heal faster than if you hadn’t used this black tea trick.

You won’t know how badly sunburned you are for 24 hours.

That’s according to dermatology professor Dr. Tanya Kormelli from UCLA. She says sunburn is a result of damaged cells expanding, and leaking plasma and other inflammatory compounds. That’s why your skin gets red, puffy and painful… and from the minute you burn yourself, things will only get worse over the next 24 hours, which is when the inflammation is at full force. So protect yourself with a high numbered SPF sunscreen and wear protective clothing if you’re going to be out in the sun.

Pop vitamin D instead. According to the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, low levels of “D” are linked to daytime sleepiness. Here’s why: Vitamin D helps keep bones and muscles healthy – so too little can cause weak muscles, and sore joints that could keep you up at night. Also, low vitamin D levels are linked to inflammation – which directly causes sleepiness. So start popping up to a‑thousand International Units of vitamin D daily. Especially if you suffer from milk allergies, or are a vegetarian or vegan, and are getting less “D” than average.

Your favorite caffeinated beverage could help you stay younger – and healthier – longer! That’s according to Dr. David Furman, director of the Stanford Institute for Immunity and Infection.

He and his research team studied chronic inflammation – which gradually increases as we age. It’s linked to almost every single big-time disease, including heart problems, cancer, joint disorders and Alzheimer’s. And in the study, the participants with the lowest levels of inflammation – at any age – had one surprising thing in common: They all drank caffeinated beverages. And the more caffeine they consumed – up to 5 cups of coffee a day – the lower their inflammation levels… and the less likely they were to have symptoms of worsening health, like high blood pressure or hardening of the arteries.

So, why is caffeine such an effective anti-inflammatory? Because it greatly reduces activity along the body’s inflammatory gene pathway – and helps short-circuit the normal body-wide inflammation linked to aging.

Here’s why you should KEEP ordering spicy food, no matter how much it scorches your mouth (within reason of course):
Because spicier food is healthier! That’s according to Dr. Ashwin Mehta, a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine. He says when we eat hot-and-spicy food, it causes mild inflammation from our tongue all the way down to our digestive tract.
And while chronic inflammation can cause health problems, the temporary inflammation caused by spicy food is just enough to increase saliva AND blood flow. And in turn, this makes the lining in our gut better able to absorb nutrients from food – so, more healthy vitamins and nutrients reach our organs.

To fight pain, load your salad with tomatoes and bell peppers (red, yellow, orange or green). They both contain plant compounds called salicylates – which reduce painful inflammation as well as aspirin. And since they’re all natural – no side effects! Researchers at UCLA say you should try to eat a heaping cup of tomatoes or bell peppers daily for the best results.

Doctors at the Mayo Clinic say that warming up a sore back provides 33% more pain relief than taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen… And it often works within about 20 minutes. That’s because – according to inflammation expert and biochemist Dr. Barry Sears – heat relaxes tight muscles, increases blood flow to injured tissues, and flushes out pain-triggering compounds.

So, heat up your back by taking a steamy bath, or using a hot water bottle, heat wraps, or an electric heating pad. And get ready for some relief!

Pop an antihistamine every night – even if you don’t have allergies. That’s the recommendation from dermatologists at Georgetown University Medical Center. It’s because antihistamines reduce the sinus inflammation that leads to puffy eyes… And they constrict blood vessels, which improves under-eye circles. Your best bet? A 24‑hour antihistamine that doesn’t include a decongestant. Within a month, the skin around your eyes will look better.
As with all medication, check with your doctor to see if you can take an antihistamine before you start.

If you’re a procrastinator, this may motivate you to change your ways: You’re more likely to develop heart disease. That’s according to the Journal of Behavioral Medicine. Researchers found that people who procrastinate take more health risks, like smoking and drinking… They also have chronic stress – because they’re always worried about what they’re NOT getting done. Put those two together and you have a recipe for inflammation and heart disease. So get your to-do’s handled… And you’ll be a lot healthier mentally and physically.
