If you’re sick – and you’ve been using the same tissue to blow your nose all morning – is that a problem? Well, according to Dr. Wendy Bennett, an internist from Johns Hopkins, that ratty tissue won’t hurt you – but it could hurt those around you. Because each time you touch the tissue, you’re touching your germy mucus – and wherever your hands land afterward will be contaminated with your virus. So grab a new tissue. Or sneeze into your elbow, since that’s less likely to touch other surfaces or people.

If you blow your nose with the force of a typhoon, you may be making yourself sicker in the process. That’s according to Dr. Neil Schachter, medical director of the Respiratory Care Department at New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital. He says, typically when we blow our nose, we produce 10 times as much pressure as when we sneeze or cough. And the more pressure, the more likely it is that mucus will shoot into our sinuses, spreading the infection. So how hard is too hard when blowing your nose?

Dr. Schachter says, if you don’t feel any pressure in your sinuses before you blow, but then feel it afterward, you’ve blown too hard. And beware of a crackling sound in your ears. That’s excess mucus being blown back into the middle ear – hello, ear infection. So if you’re completely congested, the best thing to do is to loosen mucus before you blow. You can do that by spraying a saline mist into your nose – give it a minute to settle in and work – then blow gently, one nostril at a time.

If your partner – or best friend – is sick, don’t let them borrow your phone. Or if you do, clean it first before you use it again. Gadgets with glass touch screens carry 18 times more bacteria than a toilet’s flush handle! And a recent Stanford University study found that if you put a virus on a glass surface, at least 30% of that virus will end up on your fingertips!

…even knowing our hands frequently carry hundreds of times MORE germs than a park bench or an escalator handrail! Which means, the germs already on our hands are more likely to make us sick than any germy thing we touch in a restaurant. So, before you pick up that hamburger, ask yourself, did I wash my hands? Because our hands are in constant contact with our mouth – or with things we put IN our mouth – making them the fastest route to illness.

People who get hugged daily are less likely to get sick. That’s according to research from Carnegie Mellon University – which found that hugs boost the immune system. What’s the connection? The physical contact and social support that go along with hugging both reduce stress. And when our stress is lower – our immune system is stronger.

To fight the flu, load up on cranberries: Cranberries have more antioxidants than other common fruits and vegetables. One serving has five times the amount in broccoli. Cranberries are also a natural probiotic, which means they enhance the good bacteria levels in your gut and protect you from foodborne illnesses.

But if you do, beware of the soda CAN… That’s because a new study found that most cans of soda carry a variety of bacteria on the tops that get ingested when we drink. The worst offenders are cans bought from grocery stores and gas stations – which tend to be touched by a lot of other people… While cans bought from vending machines, or in 12-pack boxes, had the fewest germs. The fix? Always wipe off the top of your soda can, or rinse it with water, before drinking from it.

Will these things make you sick?

Let’s start with kissing. The good news is, most viral infections seep in through your nose and eyes, not your mouth. In fact, the Journal of Infectious Diseases says only 8% of people typically get sick after smooching someone who has a cold. It’s actually safer to kiss someone with a cold than to shake their hand – and then rub your nose.

So, will staying in a hotel make you sick? You bet. If the person staying in the room the night before you was sick – a third of hotel room surfaces will be coated in illness-causing germs. That’s according to the University of Virginia School of Medicine. So, bring some sanitizing wipes and get to work on the light switch, TV remote, doorknobs and phone. Those areas are the least likely to be cleaned by housekeeping.

Do you need to toss your toothbrush after you’ve had a cold or flu? Nope. You can’t re-infect yourself. When you get sick, your immune system cranks out antibodies specific to the strain of virus you have. And those antibodies stick around to make sure you don’t get the same thing twice.

If you’re near someone who’s sick, close your mouth. Germs travel through the air. In fact, they can fly as far as 30 feet. So if you’re forced to sit near someone who’s coughing, wheezing, or sneezing, it’s better to breathe through your nose than your mouth. That’s because tiny nose hairs act as filters to keep out the germs.

winter-cold-vitaminD

We may be more vulnerable to colds in the winter because there’s less sunlight, and we’re absorbing less vitamin D. People with decreased levels of D have weaker immune systems. That’s because D kick-starts our body’s immune response. But it’s not like you can pop some D when you feel a cold coming on, to beat it. You need to increase your levels before you’re sick. So either take 2,000 International Units in a supplement daily – of course talk to your doctor first – or get 10 minutes of daylight exposure every day.
