Excellent. Because just one glass of tea, hot or iced, can improve your heart health. That’s according to the journal Clinical Nutrition. Researchers found that when people drank just one glass of tea, their blood flow was 6.5 times higher than before they drank the tea. And better blood flow is key to reducing conditions like Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. It’s down to the flavonoid compounds in tea, which widen blood vessels, improving circulation and lowering blood pressure.

Is one healthier than the other? Yes! Dr. Jeffrey Blumberg, antioxidant researcher at Tufts University, says tea’s healthy benefits come from its flavonoids. And HOT tea generally has the most because heat unlocks the compounds. But when you add ice, it dilutes the flavonoids and weakens the health benefits.

Grab a glass of MINT iced tea. You know we’re big fans of drinking tea in general… because whether it’s iced or hot, tea’s full of antioxidants proven to boost immune function, and even slow the growth of cancer tumors. But if your goal is to cool down, adding mint to iced tea is the way to go. First, because the menthol in mint stimulates sensory neurons, which MAGNIFIES the cooling sensation we feel. In turn, psychologist Dr. Bryan Raudenbush says mint tea stimulates our alertness and energy – which explains why athletes who drank mint tea before a workout felt motivated to exercise longer and harder than those who drank water.

And as a bonus, mint tea can even help us lose weight. In a study, volunteers who sniffed peppermint before meals ate 400 fewer calories per day… which is enough to lose about a pound a week!

Before you sip iced tea or iced coffee to cool off in sweltering heat, consider trying a HOT drink instead. It sounds counterintuitive, but it may cool you down better than something ice-cold.

Loughborough University researchers in the UK found hot drinks increase body temperature, and can trigger sweat, which is the body’s way of cooling off. That’s why many of the top tea-consuming countries – like India – have hot climates.

But other research shows cold drinks work best in extremely humid conditions since sweat evaporates more slowly in humid weather.

So when in Phoenix, drink hot tea. And in New Orleans or New York City, drink it iced.

Did you know that a glass of iced tea is more than refreshing? Black tea can help reduce stress too. That’s because it has a combination of plant compounds that short-circuit the brain’s production of the stress hormone cortisol.

To get the biggest health boost from tea – brew your own…
Skip the bottled kind.

You’d have to drink 20 bottles a day to get the same level of disease-fighting polyphenols in 1 cup of brewed tea. And if you liked it iced, chill your home-brewed tea immediately so it’ll retain as many antioxidants as possible.
