Do you tend to feel nauseous from road trips, vacation food, or rising humidity?

Eat some fresh cantaloupe! According to research by the British Heart Foundation, it can calm your upset stomach in as little as 15 minutes. The reason? The melon’s distinct aroma helps quiet the brain’s nausea center. Cantaloupe also contains tons of beta-carotene, which reduces the stomach inflammation that can cause nausea by 20%.

According to the American Society for Microbiology, nearly HALF of all kitchen towels are teeming with bacteria. That includes E.coli and other illness-causing pathogens. And the chances are even higher that your kitchen towel is contaminated if you live in a humid climate – you have a larger family – and your family eats meat, instead of being vegetarian. Of the contaminated kitchen towels, 75% contained bacteria normally found in the intestines… and another 14% grew colonies of staph.

So to avoid catching something disgusting from your kitchen towels, the researchers offer these tips:

First: Before you start food prep, and after handling raw meat and its packaging, wash your hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. That way, most of the germs will be washed down the drain instead of ending up on the towel.

Next: For cloth kitchen towels, wash them often. And use hot water, so it’ll remove bacteria. Also, have multiple dishtowels handy to avoid reusing a dirty one.

Finally: Only use paper towels once. The more you use a paper towel, the higher the odds you’ll start spreading germs around.

Hot and humid weather is a recipe for serious B.O. Here’s the fix: Grab some baking soda. Just like leaving a box in your fridge kills odors – it can do the same on your skin. Because baking soda kills the odor-causing bacteria that tends to fester on damp skin. In fact, it’s so effective, scientists say that one application fights off odors for up to 24 hours.

All you have to do is shake a tablespoon of baking soda onto a washcloth, and add a little water to make a paste. Then, in the shower, scrub your underarms, skin creases, and feet for one minute, then rinse thoroughly.

Before you sip iced tea or iced coffee to cool off in sweltering heat, consider trying a HOT drink instead. It sounds counterintuitive, but it may cool you down better than something ice-cold.

Loughborough University researchers in the UK found hot drinks increase body temperature, and can trigger sweat, which is the body’s way of cooling off. That’s why many of the top tea-consuming countries – like India – have hot climates.

But other research shows cold drinks work best in extremely humid conditions since sweat evaporates more slowly in humid weather.

So when in Phoenix, drink hot tea. And in New Orleans or New York City, drink it iced.

humidifier

One of the reasons we get more viruses in fall and winter is because the air is drier. A lack of humidity allows viruses to thrive and makes it harder for our nasal passages to trap and eliminate them. So keep a humidifier going at home. But make sure to keep it clean. Put about 5 drops of oregano, eucalyptus or peppermint oil in the water reservoir. The oil will reduce germs and make the air smell nice. However, you’ll still need to clean the reservoir weekly.
