Give them a hug! According to the journal Frontiers in Psychology, affectionate touching – like rubbing your kid’s back, or playing with their hair – as well as giving hugs – improved signaling between a child’s body and brain, and can raise their self-esteem. That in turn improves a child’s body image and lowers their risk of eating disorders.

…hug your loved ones more often! Psychology professor Dr. Thomas Joiner from Florida State University says, in studies, people who do the most hugging are less likely to get sick when exposed to a flu virus. It works because regular physical contact with other humans bolsters the immune system – by challenging it through exposure to other people’s microbes, which makes it stronger. Another reason hugs are a flu fighter? They reduce stress, which makes us more resistant to infections. So get hugging!

Do you know someone who says, “I’m a hugger!” – maybe it’s you? Well,
even if you’re not a hugger – follow their lead… because according to the
Touch Research Institute, regular physical contact with loved ones – whether
it’s a hug, a snuggle in bed, or a backrub – is a proven way to lower blood pressure, ease migraines, soothe asthma symptoms, and even recover from being sick faster! And all it takes is about 10 minutes of touch daily to get the benefits. It works because hugging – or touch – reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

Did you know that hugging can keep us healthy? The hug receptors in our skin send signals to the vagus nerve – which lowers our heart rate and blood pressure. Hugging also releases the bonding chemical oxytocin, which has been shown to decrease the risk of heart disease.

People who get hugged daily are less likely to get sick. That’s according to research from Carnegie Mellon University – which found that hugs boost the immune system. What’s the connection? The physical contact and social support that go along with hugging both reduce stress. And when our stress is lower – our immune system is stronger.

You don’t need to get a physical hug for your body to produce a burst of the feel-good hormone, oxytocin. Face-to-face contact with a close friend or loved one can do the trick! Studies show that when we’re stressed, our arteries tighten up about 35%, which kicks our blood pressure up a couple of notches…But the minute you’re face to face with friends, they relax by about 22%.
