…but the woman in your life may think otherwise. George Preti is an organic chemist with the Monell Chemical Sciences Center. He says, a woman’s hormones give her a sharper sense of smell – and biologists think it’s because women need it to subconsciously sniff out a mate’s genes, so they can produce healthy offspring. But on a day-to-day basis, it means a little bit of B.O. will be noticed by a woman faster than a man. And a woman may pick up on odors a man doesn’t even detect. And don’t bother trying to body spray your way out of it! Dr. Preti says, when they tested 32 different fragrances in an effort to mask odor – only 2 of them fooled women. The men who were tested? They were fooled by 19 of the scents! So, guys, if you’re deciding whether or not to shower before your date – shower. A woman can smell body odor a mile away.

Have you ever woken up earlier than normal and felt nauseous?

There’s a good reason. Internist Dr. Keri Peterson says, just like our daily sleep and hormonal cycles, our stomach and digestive processes run on a daily rhythm. And during sleep, our stomach makes extra acid to move along whatever’s lingering in there. And by morning, that acid has emptied out. But if you wake up earlier than usual – or the middle of the night – that unfinished process can leave you feeling queasy. If that happens to you, Dr. Peterson says to eat a little something to neutralize the acid, and you’ll be feeling better in no time.

Inhale deeply, while raising your shoulders toward your ears. Then exhale slowly, and push your shoulders down. Repeat 5 times. Stress management experts say combining a shoulder shrug with deep breathing releases tension in our neck, shoulders and upper back. It also produces endorphins, which cancel out stress hormones, and reduce heart rate and blood pressure. Allowing you to literally shrug off your stress in under 60 seconds.

Chewing sugarless gum can increase saliva production, cleaning your mouth and reducing your risk for cavities. But gum can do something else, too. It can help you concentrate. The journal BioMed Research found chewing temporarily raises levels of hormones that make us alert and engaged in what we’re doing. And that helps you think faster.

Don’t reheat your to-go cup of coffee in the microwave until you transfer it to a ceramic mug. The Environmental Working Group says a lot of paper to-go cups are lined with a chemical that may release harmful compounds when microwaved. And doing that a lot could mess with your hormone levels. So if you find yourself reheating your to-go coffee every day – pour it into a mug first, just to be safe.

If you need a good reason to become a volunteer – I’ve got 3 good ones:

•You’ll live longer. Researchers at the University of Michigan tracked over a thousand seniors for a decade. The result: Those who volunteered on a regular basis were 40% more likely to be alive at the end of the study. That’s because volunteering increases the levels of hormones that help cells repair themselves.

•The “helper’s high.” Just thinking about doing a good deed causes your brain to release the feel-good chemical dopamine. And helping others releases so much mood-boosting serotonin that it’s just as effective treating depression as medication.

•Helping others improves relationships. Researchers studied people who took care of a spouse suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. And no matter how challenging things got, the caregiver developed even stronger feelings of love and compassion for their ailing spouse.

We say on this show all the time that a lack of sleep leads to weight gain. But here’s how bad it really is… Just skimping on sleep 4 nights in a row can slow your fat burn by 16%. That’s because without sleep, the hormone that regulates fat storage goes into overdrive. So get 7 hours a night and you’ll burn more fat without even trying.

milk-breakouts

That’s according to the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. It turns out that skim milk causes the MOST skin flare-ups…Because fat-free milk is concentrated, so it contains more breakout-causing hormones. Dairy farmers also add whey protein to make skim milk taste creamier – which can cause breakouts.
Your best bet: Eat yogurt… Which causes fewer breakouts than any other milk product. Experts believe it’s because of yogurt’s probiotic bacteria.

like a cranky baby. It’s all chemical – because not eating for a while can cause levels of the happy hormone, serotonin, to drop. That makes it more difficult to regulate our emotions. So, to stay on an even keel, never get to the point where you’re absolutely famished.
