Get a whiff of rosemary oil. According to the British Psychological Society, the plant compounds in rosemary boost our so-called “prospective memory” by about 75%. Which helps us remember to take medicine at 2 o’clock, or mail a birthday card on Friday.

Next: Want to reduce your stress and improve your memory? Watch your favorite sitcom. According to the Memosyn Neurology Institute, when people watched a comedy, their stress levels dropped. And people who watched funny videos had lower cortisol levels and did better on memory tests.

Final memory-booster: Get crafty. Mayo Clinic researchers found people who had a creative hobby and stuck with it into old age – or picked up a new hobby – were 73% LESS likely to develop memory problems.

Don’t get bored! That’s the gist of 3 decades worth of research that tracked the health of thousands of people. The fact is: The adults who said their lives were boring were nearly three times MORE likely to die from heart disease during the study. The reason? Because boredom frequently leads to unhealthy habits, like drinking, smoking, taking drugs, watching too much TV and overeating. People also sit too much and sleep too much when they’re bored – and their minds aren’t stimulated… and being mentally engaged is as important for longevity as physical factors. The fix may sound overly-simple – but it works: Find some healthy distractions to grab your attention. Whether you take up knitting, join a book club, or learn to play racquetball. You’ll feel much more fulfilled, mentally and physically – and live longer.

Neuroscientist Dr. Kelly Lambert says that baking, gardening, woodworking and other manual activities release the natural antidepressants serotonin and dopamine. This ‘effort-driven’ reward circuit is a holdover from the days when our ancestors had to use their hands to fill their stomachs. And even though it’s a lot easier to buy bread, you can’t buy that awesome feeling of pulling your own homemade loaves out of the oven.

And that’s why a ‘hands-on’ hobby will make you feel awesome.

That’s the recommendation from the Finnish government, which advised parents to actively encourage kids to pursue hobbies and interests that require physical exertion. Especially kids age 8 and UNDER! That may sound a bit extreme over here – where most of the population never breaks a sweat. But according to the BBC, Finland produces some of the most physically fit children in Europe, and some of the highest academic results among schoolchildren in the world. So maybe there’s a link between all that exercise and smart kids. Finland’s Minister for Education and Culture thinks it’s no coincidence. She says physical activity contributes to a child’s happiness and promotes learning. Again – the recommendation from the Finnish government is: Kids should spend 3 hours exercising – every DAY.
