Did you know that if your heart gets all fluttery from stress, there’s a way to “touch” it to make the flutter – and your stress – go away?

Just do this: Take your thumb, and press it firmly in the web between the pointer finger and thumb of your other hand. Or, press hard in the space between your second and third knuckles. Psychologist Dr. Sharon Melnick, who wrote “Success Under Stress,” says the nerves under those areas go directly to your heart. And when you apply pressure to those nerves, it activates them in a way that relaxes the heart, and creates a sense of, quote “instant calm.”

Avoid listening to music you don’t like! Researchers from the University of Maryland found people forced to listen to songs they disliked saw their blood vessels constrict about 6% within 30 minutes, which reduced blood flow, strained their heart, and raised the risk for clogged arteries. While people listening to their favorite songs saw their blood vessels expand by 26%, making them wider and more relaxed. And their bodies were pumping out nitric oxide, a compound that helps prevent the clots that can trigger a heart attack.

Here are tips for getting a better blood pressure reading at your next doctor’s appointment:

First: Keep quiet while the cuff is on. Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center found talking can increase blood flow and make your blood pressure 5 to 10 points higher than it really is.

Next: Watch your posture! Crossing your legs can temporarily increase your blood pressure.

And your arm position matters, too. For the most accurate reading, keep the cuffed arm at roughly the same level as your heart.

If you and your significant other fight and bicker all the time – not only is your relationship in trouble, so is your heart!

According to UC Berkeley, constantly fighting causes your cardiovascular system to overload… and that can damage your blood vessels. The result? High blood pressure. But avoiding fights isn’t much better. The researchers found that stonewalling – or giving your partner the silent treatment – caused muscle tension, headaches and sore joints. So, choose your battles wisely, let some things go, and when you need to hash things out – do it in a calm, rational way. Remember, you’re together for a reason. And having a loving relationship is definitely GOOD for your heart health!

If you’re stuck in traffic, keep your car’s A/C running. It could protect your heart! Researchers found when drivers kept the air on during a two-hour commute, they had a 32% increase in heart-rate variability, which is a measure of cardiovascular health. That’s compared to people who kept their windows rolled down instead. The reason? Because the A/C filters out exhaust particles spewing from the cars around you. Those pollutants trigger inflammation in the body, and it’s why being in heavy traffic triples your risk of heart attack within one hour.

It’s not your imagination… research shows that fingernails tend to grow about three times faster than toenails. Scientists say it’s because our fingers are closer to our heart than our toes… which means they receive greater blood flow and get more of the nutrients they need to grow – including protein, calcium, and vitamin D.

Drink at least 5 glasses of water a day! Research from Loma Linda University found that’ll lower your heart disease risk by almost 60%. That’s a drop similar to stopping smoking, exercising more, or maintaining a healthy weight. Why is water crucial? Researcher Dr. Chan Knutsen says dehydration thickens blood, and stresses your heart. Meanwhile, water reduces blood viscosity, meaning it thins the blood, so it pumps more smoothly through your arteries.

Eat more strawberries and blueberries! Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health studied nearly 100‑thousand women under age 40. The result: Those who ate at least 3 servings a week of strawberries or blueberries were 32% less likely to have a heart attack. That’s about a‑half cup of berries a day.

So, what makes strawberries and blueberries so heart-healthy? They contain tons of anthocyanins – compounds that help widen arteries, and fight against the buildup of damaging, artery-blocking plaque. In fact, just about any red– or blue–colored fruit or vegetable can boost your heart health… including cherries, grapes, eggplant, black currants, plums, purple cabbage and boysenberries.

Eating a little chocolate every day is GOOD for you – even if it’s milk chocolate.

According to the journal Heart, people who eat 3.5 ounces of chocolate every day (that’s about 20 Hershey’s kisses) – dark or MILK chocolate – had a 14% lower risk of heart disease and a 23% lower risk of stroke than those who ate no chocolate.
Ounce for ounce, dark chocolate contains more antioxidants called flavonols – than any fruit or vegetable out there! And here’s what a good dose of flavonols will do for your health.
It improves the ability of blood vessels to expand and contract, which results in better blood flow to your hands, legs, and brain.
It helps the body regulate blood pressure.
A healthy dose of flavonols also decreases the stickiness of blood platelets – which reduces the risk of blood clots and stroke.
And it increases your ‘good’ cholesterol – which lowers your risk of a heart attack.
But since chocolate is still high in fat and calories, a couple of squares a day is plenty.

Which is worse for your heart?

Job burnout – or smoking? Well, if you’re exhausted by your work – physically and emotionally… And your boss is a jerk… You’re a prime candidate for heart problems. A new study has found a strong link between job burnout and coronary heart disease – which is when plaque builds up in your arteries and can lead to a heart attack. In fact, people who were at the top of the job burnout scale were 80% more likely to have coronary disease. That was WAY more extreme than the researchers expected… and it makes job burnout a stronger predictor of heart disease than smoking, high cholesterol and stress! So if your job is making you sick – you may want to change jobs before it kills you, literally.
