It doesn’t take a lot of hard work to improve your health. According to new research in the Journal of the American Heart Association, just two minutes of walking can make a difference. Because every two minutes you spend just climbing stairs throughout the day is another “mini-workout” – and they can really add up. In fact, the researchers found that getting several mini-workouts a day can boost your heart health and help you live as long as exercising for a-half hour at a time.

Drink plenty of water. Loma Linda researchers say water thins the blood, and makes it easier for your heart to pump. It can also help prevent dangerous clots from forming, which cuts your risk of heart attack in half. Find yourself falling short of the minimum five glasses of water a day? Download a free app, like Waterlogged for the iPhone, or Aqualert for Android. You can set the app to remind you to drink. It’ll also track your water consumption, and show whether you’re meeting your daily goals.

Avoid listening to music you don’t like! Researchers from the University of Maryland found people forced to listen to songs they disliked saw their blood vessels constrict about 6% within 30 minutes, which reduced blood flow, strained their heart, and raised the risk for clogged arteries. While people listening to their favorite songs saw their blood vessels expand by 26%, making them wider and more relaxed. And their bodies were pumping out nitric oxide, a compound that helps prevent the clots that can trigger a heart attack.

You’ve heard women referred to as “Cat Ladies.” Well, there are a lot of “Cat Gentlemen” out there, too. According to a recent survey, 53% of men who own cats say their cat is the most important thing in their life! And that’s a good thing. Pet ownership has been linked to less stress, lower blood pressure, and better heart health. And 87% of doctors say their patients’ moods improved as a result of owning a pet.

If you and your significant other fight and bicker all the time – not only is your relationship in trouble, so is your heart!

According to UC Berkeley, constantly fighting causes your cardiovascular system to overload… and that can damage your blood vessels. The result? High blood pressure. But avoiding fights isn’t much better. The researchers found that stonewalling – or giving your partner the silent treatment – caused muscle tension, headaches and sore joints. So, choose your battles wisely, let some things go, and when you need to hash things out – do it in a calm, rational way. Remember, you’re together for a reason. And having a loving relationship is definitely GOOD for your heart health!

Eat some fruit – fresh AND dried – every day. British researchers found eating one cup of fresh fruit, like an apple – and a‑third of a cup of dried fruit, like raisins or dried apricots, can reduce your risk of heart attack by 40%. It’s down to the plant compounds they contain called polyphenols, which heal and strengthen blood vessel walls, and prevent the buildup of artery-clogging plaque. The recommended amount again: One cup of fresh fruit – and a‑third of a cup of dried fruit.

Improve your circulation and heart health at work

Do you shake your leg or tap your foot all day long? Or maybe someone you know does it and it drives you nuts. Well, it may irritate people around you – or make you appear restless. But it’s a sign of good health! Because it dramatically cuts your risk of cardiovascular disease – by offsetting some of the damage we do by sitting all day. That’s according to experts from the University of Missouri.

For their study, researchers monitored hundreds of office workers – and tested their leg muscle function before the experiment began. Then, workers sitting at a desk were asked to tap one foot for a minute at a time, off and on, over and over, during a 3-hour span. Then they tested the leg muscle function again afterward. The result?

The researchers found the leg that people tapped repeatedly had a much higher blood flow than the other. In fact, blood flow slowed dramatically in the stationary leg.

And the researchers concluded that even that tiny bit of movement was enough to improve overall circulation and thus heart health.

So, if you have a desk job – or sit for long stretches of time, tap your feet – jiggle your leg – or fidget in any way you like. It’s no substitute for getting up and moving every hour – but it’ll help keep your blood moving.

Hitting the gym or sipping a glass of wine?

Would you believe it’s the wine! That’s according to a study from the University of Alberta. They found that the polyphenols in red wine, nuts, and grapes may be just as good for us, if not better, than exercise. That’s because they all contain a compound called resveratrol, which improves bone, muscle and heart health in the same way a workout does. But before you break out the corkscrew, remember… the benefits only come from one glass a day – not the entire bottle. Also, it doesn’t mean you should stop exercising altogether.

Ever wonder WHY it’s healthier to have a big butt, than to have a beer belly?

Here’s the answer, courtesy of researchers at the University of Oxford. Belly fat – also known as abdominal fat or visceral fat – is dangerous because it often surrounds vital organs and releases inflammatory chemicals into your system on a consistent basis. And those chemicals have been linked to heart disease, insulin resistance, and diabetes. But extra padding around the hips and thighs produces beneficial hormones that trap fatty acids, which boosts heart health and keeps blood sugar spikes in check. So what should you do if you have more abdominal fat than lower body fat? Eat fiber-filled foods to lower insulin and cholesterol levels. You should also do aerobic exercise – at least 30 minutes a day – to lose the fat. And get your blood sugar and blood fats tested to check for abnormalities.

After a tough workout, have salmon for dinner. It’ll help with muscle soreness and tenderness. That’s according to sports physician Jordan Metzl. He says the omega-3 fatty acids in fish are anti-inflammatory. And just like they’re good for your heart – they’re good for your muscles, too.
