Parents, did your kids get a pair of child-size headphones for Christmas, that the box promised were “safe for young ears”? Don’t believe it. Because the consumer-product review site, Wirecutter, did a little investigating. They analyzed 50 different children’s headphone brands and found that half of them did NOT restrict decibel levels as advertised. And the worst ones allowed volume so loud it could permanently damage a child’s hearing – or even an adult’s – within minutes! For reference, the noise of a lawnmower is 100 decibels – and can damage hearing after 15 minutes. And the government-mandated safe limit in the workplace for adults is 85 decibels, which is about as noisy as an idling bulldozer.

Well, these child-friendly headphones allow the volume to reach 114 decibels – WAY over the safe limit. If you want to see if your child’s headphones are safe – go to The Wirecutter dot com for their list. And to further protect their hearing, make sure kids never listen to anything higher than 60% of the max volume – and have them take a break at least every hour.

Parents, do your kids have a pair of child-size headphones that the box said were, quote, “safe for young ears”? Don’t believe it. Because the consumer-product review site, Wirecutter, did a little investigating. They analyzed 30 different children’s headphone brands, and found that half of them did not restrict decibel levels as advertised. And the  worst ones allowed volume so loud it could permanently damage a child’s hearing – or even an adult’s – within minutes! For reference, the noise of a lawnmower is 100 decibels – and can damage hearing after 15 minutes. And the government mandated safe limit in the workplace for adults is 85 decibels – which is like the noise an idling bulldozer makes.

Well, these child-friendly headphones allow the volume to reach 114 decibels – WAY over the safe limit. If you want to see if your child’s headphones are safe – go to TheWirecutter.com for their list “Best Kids Headphones.” And make sure kids never listen to anything higher than 60% of the max volume – and to give their ears a break at least every hour.

The danger of wearing earbuds while exercising

If you exercise while wearing earbuds – you’re at risk from cardio ear! It’s similar to swimmer’s ear – because when sweat collects in your ear canal, it can cause an infection within 24-hours. Ear, nose and throat specialist Dr. Eugene Chio says when sweat gets trapped in your ear, it creates the perfect moist environment for bacteria to thrive. So how do you know if you have cardio ear? It’ll be painful, throbbing with an oozy discharge… and it’s not just gross, it’s dangerous. It could rupture your eardrum! So give your earbuds a rest at least once a week – and go old-school with over-the-ear headphones.

Do you think your kids are ignoring you?

If you keep asking your kid to do their chores – and they don’t respond – they may not be ignoring you. They may not be able to hear you! That’s because one out of every eight kids between the ages of 6 and 18 already has hearing damage! I’ll give you one guess why…Yup, listening to loud music through their headphones. So tell your kids to keep the volume at the halfway point on their phone or MP3 player. Because most kids crank up their music to about 100 decibels – and just so you know, a chainsaw is 110 decibels. And after 5 minutes of exposure, hearing can start being damaged permanently.

The jury is still out as to whether there’s a connection between cell phones and an increased cancer risk.

But taking a few precautions can’t hurt. Start with these from the Environmental Health Trust:

Don’t stash your phone in your shirt or pants pocket. Keep it at least an inch from your body. And when you’re talking, use earphones or a headset.

As far as the case protecting your phone – make it plastic or rubber. Metal ones increase the radiation your phone gives off.

Also, avoid making calls when the battery is low – or the signal is weak. Like when you’re in an elevator, parking garage, or a moving vehicle. Your phone has to work harder in those situations to find and lock onto a signal – so it emits more radiation.

Wearing headphones can be dangerous.

headphones-dangerous-trainBe careful where you wear headphones. About 20 pedestrians are injured or killed each year while wearing headphones! Researchers say that more than half of the headphone accidents were the result of people walking near railroad tracks, and being hit by trains – because they couldn’t hear the trains coming.

How to protect your hearing.

If you want to save your hearing, stay away from ear buds. When people listen to music using ear buds, they turn it up too high in an attempt to drown out outside noise. But ear doctors say our ear isn’t made to listen to music as loudly or as long as we do these days. So instead, get a pair of headphones that blocks ambient noise and listen to music at a lower volume.

Warning! Do not use other people’s earbuds.

I sure love my music, but, I will never borrow a friends headphones or earbuds! Earphones are crawling with germs that can lead to ear infections.

People who regularly have earbuds in for at least 30 minutes at a time have 12% more bacteria in their ears than those who listen less often. My advice? Regularly clean your earbuds with alcohol wipes.
