You might want to get your vitamin D levels checked. A new study from Finland found adults low on “D” were twice as likely to experience frequent head pain, compared to those with plenty of vitamin D. The reason? Because there are “D” receptors in the area of the brain linked to pain. And if there isn’t enough vitamin D available, the receptors may transmit pain signals from your stiff muscles, instead, triggering a headache. It’s tricky to get sufficient vitamin D from food and sunlight alone. But talk to your doctor before you start taking a supplement, to make sure it’s the right treatment for you.

Stop chewing gum. A recent study found that when people stopped chewing gum for a month, 87% said their headaches decreased or disappeared. It has to do with the fact that chewing can trigger a painful condition in the jaw, called TMJ. And for many people, the pain can work its way up from the jaw and cause a splitting headache. So, if you suspect TMJ, lay off the gum and talk to your dentist.

Make some fresh ginger tea! That’s the suggestion of registered dietician Brooke Alpert. Ginger has natural anti-inflammatory properties, because it contains compounds linked to relaxing blood vessels and preventing blood clots. And just one cup of ginger tea can help ward off headaches and muscle pain as effectively as some pain medications! For the best results, Alpert recommends boiling a 2-inch piece of ginger root in 2 cups of water for 10 minutes. Then, let the water cool, strain it into a mug, and sip away your pain.

Forget about trying a little of “the hair of the dog that bit you.” That old adage can be dated back to Medieval times, when it was a treatment for rabies! And doctors believed that literally stuffing the bite wound with hair from the rabid dog would help patients recover. It didn’t work then – and the drinking equivalent won’t cure a hangover now. According to the Mayo Clinic, a hangover occurs once you’ve stopped drinking, and the liver is finally able to quickly lower your blood alcohol levels… Triggering symptoms that can include headache, thirst, fatigue, dizziness, and nausea. You can feel better with rest, hydration, and aspirin. But doctors say the only real cure is time. So don’t bother drinking a Bloody Mary after a rough night. Quoting the Mayo Clinic experts here: “The hair of the dog that bit you” won’t work.

Slather some menthol gel on your neck, forehead and behind your ears – the mintier, the better!

Researchers from Thomas Jefferson University, in Pennsylvania, found 80% of migraine sufferers saw their symptoms improve within 2 hours of a menthol gel treatment… And for 1-in-4 people, migraines disappeared completely!

What’s so magical about mint? Researchers say “menthol appears to stimulate nerves that communicate with the brain to ease pain.”

For best results, get a gel that contains at least 6% menthol.

…when you can blast away pain with PEPPERMINT?

That’s from a new study in the journal Phytomedicine – which found that peppermint oil can soothe headaches as effectively as taking 3 extra-strength Tylenol.

Researchers say it’s down to the menthol in peppermint. Think of the way chewing minty gum makes you feel like you’re inhaling cool, winter air. Well, that same sensation from menthol is proven to also stimulate blood flow, relax muscles, and calm nerves in a way that relieves pain within 15 minutes!

So, how exactly does one “take” peppermint oil? Researchers recommend mixing 6 drops of oil with your favorite body lotion. Then, firmly massage the lotion into areas where you feel pain – like your forehead, temples, and neck.

If you and your significant other fight and bicker all the time – not only is your relationship in trouble, so is your heart!

According to UC Berkeley, constantly fighting causes your cardiovascular system to overload… and that can damage your blood vessels. The result? High blood pressure. But avoiding fights isn’t much better. The researchers found that stonewalling – or giving your partner the silent treatment – caused muscle tension, headaches and sore joints. So, choose your battles wisely, let some things go, and when you need to hash things out – do it in a calm, rational way. Remember, you’re together for a reason. And having a loving relationship is definitely GOOD for your heart health!

75% of general doctor visits are for stress-related problems! That’s because stress can worsen symptoms of other conditions, and cause problems like headaches. So, we’ve gotta learn to cope with our stress. That means we should take time every day to relax and do something we enjoy. We’ll all be less stressed, and hopefully won’t have to spend as much time in the doctor’s office.

A new study has found headaches in children increase in the fall because of school stress caused by academic performance and changed bedtime routines. Researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, analyzed about 1,300 visits to the hospital’s emergency department to figure this out. And while visits for headaches among kids between the ages of 5 to 18 stayed about the same for most of the year – they jumped over 30% in the fall.

Other factors contributing to kids’ headaches: An increase in after-school activities, skipping meals and not drinking enough water.

It’s not surprising. According to Dr. Seth Marquit, the medical director at the Pritikin Longevity Center, any time you make a major dietary change – even if it’s healthy – it can throw off your system, and one side effect is headaches. Like if you cut out chocolate – or caffeine… both of which HELP head pain. The good news is, the headaches will be a short-term problem and should disappear once your body adjusts to the new eating plan. But in the meantime, here are a few natural ways to get rid of them.

First: Drink a glass of water. Headaches can be caused by dehydration. Once you’re adequately hydrated, your blood will flow more smoothly and the pain should subside.

Another natural headache cure: Pinch the spot between your thumb and index finger for 60 seconds. That’s an acupressure point that can relieve head pain.

Lastly, try aromatherapy – and take a whiff of an essential oil like eucalyptus, basil or peppermint. They all trigger a relaxation response.
