You might want to get your vitamin D levels checked. A new study from Finland found adults low on “D” were twice as likely to experience frequent head pain, compared to those with plenty of vitamin D. The reason? Because there are “D” receptors in the area of the brain linked to pain. And if there isn’t enough vitamin D available, the receptors may transmit pain signals from your stiff muscles, instead, triggering a headache. It’s tricky to get sufficient vitamin D from food and sunlight alone. But talk to your doctor before you start taking a supplement, to make sure it’s the right treatment for you.

A study has found that half of all migraines start in the morning – unlike other head pain, like tension headaches. And it’s often strong enough to wake us up from sleep. That’s why migraines are even nicknamed “alarm clock” headaches. Internist Dr. Richard Liebowitz from Duke University says, between 4 and 8AM, our natural painkillers reach rock bottom levels. Meanwhile, we have sky-high adrenaline levels, which help us wake up. But they also shrink blood vessels and create the perfect recipe for severe head pain.

So, talk to your doctor about taking headache meds as soon as you wake up, so you can nip the pain in the bud.

Migraines and their relation to lightning storms

If you’re a migraine sufferer, watch out for lightning storms. More than half of people with migraines are sensitive to weather changes – particularly when there are drops in air pressure, and lightning activity. Even the flashes alone can trigger migraines. Scientists say lightning emits electromagnetic waves, produces ozone in the atmosphere, and releases fungal spores… and any one of those things could bring on a migraine. So if you know bad weather is coming your way, take your medication before the first lightning bolt strikes.

Do you suffer from headaches or even worse, migraines?

I’ve got a list of surprising headache triggers and helpful remedies.

Stressful relationships can trigger a headache. That’s because when we’re anxious, we tend to take shorter breaths, leaving us oxygen-deprived. Our body tries to compensate by constricting blood vessels…And that constriction can cause head pain. So, when you feel overwhelmed, try the 2-5-5-5 method: Take 2 minutes, and breathe in for 5 seconds, hold it for 5, then breathe out for 5.

Aromas. 1 in 50 headache sufferers are sensitive to specific “trigger smells”, like gasoline, tobacco, and perfume. If that’s you, carry a bottle of essential oils to sniff when you’re around trigger smells. Especially lavender, which has been shown to boost relaxation, or peppermint, which reduces pain.

A sunny day. According to the Northern California Headache Clinic, the glare of the sun bouncing off water, pavement, glass or snow interferes with the area of the brain that controls pain…Which can cause an instant migraine. So, try wearing sunglasses with polarized lenses, and putting them on before you step outside.

We’re more prone to headaches in the winter.

That’s because changes in temperature and barometric pressure are big triggers. They have an effect on nerves and blood vessels. Plus, the dry air this time of year can make you more prone to sinus issues that can also trigger headaches. The best thing you can do is to stay hydrated – and to keep a humidifier in your bedroom. That’ll help your sinuses. And if you know a storm is coming, pop some ibuprofen ahead of time.
