Doing little acts of kindness for your significant other can make you happier – even if you don’t get a ‘thank you’ or an act of kindness in return! That’s according to new research from the University of Rochester. They found people were happier, and felt closer to their partner, on the days they went out of their way for their loved ones, even if their generosity went unnoticed. And it can be as small as making them coffee in the morning, picking up their favorite take-out meal for dinner, or leaving them a note that says “I love you”. Just doing something kind makes your life feel more meaningful. It’s the act of doing it – NOT the validation you get from the recipient. So, do something small for the one you love, without the expectation of a ‘thank you.’ You’ll feel closer to them and happier with yourself!

Just get some decent sleep! According to the UK’s University of Warwick, the mental and physical improvements of better sleep are similar to what lottery winners felt after landing a quarter-of-a-million-dollar jackpot!

The study on over 30‑thousand people lasted 4-years. And those who made positive changes to their sleep habits were significantly happier and healthier than those who relied on sleeping pills.

From rollercoasters to horror movies, there’s a biological reason being scared feels so good!

We get a type of high from being scared – called a high-arousal response. According to Margee Kerr, a sociologist who studies fear, it’s similar to the stress response that makes us want to fight or flee – but because we KNOW we’re not in real danger, our brain perceives it as pleasurable. And it is! We feel energized and free from thoughts that usually worry us. And it’s the same feeling we get when we’re really happy.

And that’s why, on a rollercoaster, you can be screaming one minute and laughing the next.

You’re probably less stressed than most. Yale researchers found that acts of kindness – as simple as holding the door for someone, or bringing in the trash barrels for your elderly neighbor – can make you calmer and happier, immediately and long-term. In their study, the researchers found when we help others, it gives us a sense of purpose and puts our own troubles into perspective.

Like a zoo, amusement park, playground, even your local dog park. Researchers from Japan’s Hiroshima University found when you see someone else laughing and smiling – even a stranger – your brain automatically mimics their emotion. So, you’ll smile and feel happier, too. And just watching energetic dogs and puppies run and play in the sun activates the reward centers in the brain, which can make you feel happier in seconds.

Become fully engaged with something you’re passionate about. That’s according to psychotherapist and creativity coach Dr. Eric Maisel. He says putting your heart and soul into a project – which he calls, quote, “productive obsessing” – can make the time fly, and bring meaning and fulfillment to your life. Without that passion, you’ll tend to get bored, listless, give up on your goals, and even get depressed. Bottom line: If you want to be successful and happy, find a goal you can become passionately obsessed about.

But what the heck does that mean? It’s a measure of how closely your current life aligns with how you want your life to be – in terms of health, wealth and happiness. And that life satisfaction lift comes instantly after we exercise. It helps people feel more in charge of their lives. And the more consistently you exercise, the greater your overall life satisfaction will be.

Posting a picture for Throwback Thursday can do more than get you some “likes” on Instagram. It can boost happiness and help relieve work burnout! According to psychologist Dr. Scott Haltzman, looking at a fun picture of yourself as a kid can re-energize you in as little as 60-seconds! That’s because reflecting on happy childhood memories kick-starts the production of happy brain chemicals, like oxytocin – which produces a feeling of alert calmness. So any time you’re feeling run down and frazzled, scroll through your gallery of Throwback Thursday pictures for a pick-me-up.
