Eat a handful of walnuts a day! According to a study in the Journal Of Cosmetic Dermatology, the omega-3 fatty acids in walnuts helped reverse hair loss in 90% of the women studied… and 87% of them reported growing thicker hair. The omega-3s in walnuts provide hair cells with the building blocks they need to function at their best. And walnuts have more omega-3s than any other nut. So eat a handful a day for thicker, healthier hair.

Don’t panic. It doesn’t necessarily mean your hair is thinning or you’re going to end up with bald patches. Dermatologist Dr. Francesca Fusco says the average person loses about 40 strands of hair a day – to make room for the new strands coming in underneath. And most of it sheds when you shampoo. But since women are washing their hair less frequently these days – thanks to dry shampoo – it generally means more hair is coming out with every wash. Which means, if you only wash your hair once a week, you could be losing 200 hairs during that single shower – which can really seem like a lot.

So, when should you worry? If you’re losing a thousand hairs a day, that would be considered abnormal. If that’s happening, Dr. Fusco recommends putting the day’s “hair harvest” in a plastic sandwich bag – and taking it to your dermatologist to discuss it.

Guys, how do you dry your hair?

Gentlemen, here’s an important question: Why are you losing your hair? It may be because of the way you DRY it, after you wash it. That’s according to Leon Van-Gorkom, the senior manager of hair-care product development for Unilever, which owns nine different hair-care brands, including Suave, Dove and Tresemmé.

And Leon says, when the hair is wet, it becomes more vulnerable. And rubbing your hair with a towel – the way most men do – creates friction. That can damage and weaken the hair’s cuticle, which is the outer layer of each strand. And when your cuticles are weakened to a certain point, they begin to erode, and your hair breaks and falls out.

Of course, rubbing your hair with a towel isn’t the main reason people lose their hair – but it can add to any hair loss you’re already experiencing… due to hormonal changes, stress, or your inherited risk for hair loss. So instead of rubbing – pat your hair dry. Or use an old, soft, cotton t‑shirt to make a turban. That’ll absorb the water without damaging your hair.
