…for keeping the weight off! London School of Economics researchers found women of all ages who walked for over 30 minutes most days weighed less than those using treadmills or stationary bikes. Walking women also had lower BMIs and smaller waists than those who regularly played sports. The researchers speculate it’s because walking is free – and you can do it anywhere, anytime – which means people are more likely to do it, than making the effort to hit the gym or play a sport.

Wipe down those machines at the gym the right way!

So you bring a towel to the gym and use it to wipe down machines before you use them. Well, if it’s a plain ol’ cotton towel, it’s not doing much good! Microbiologists from the University of Arizona found that a cotton towel just moves MRSA from one spot to another. It hitchhikes on your towel. And if you use it to wipe off sweat, too, you’re transferring the bacteria to your skin. A better bet is to bring a microfiber towel to the gym. It’s less likely to transfer germs and bacteria from one surface to the next because the tighter weave traps germs in the fibers. Just make sure you toss it in a hot-water wash after every gym visit.

It’s a trend our researchers spotted, with many fitness centers offering a class called “Napercize” – where you work out for a while, then go down for a nap with a bunch of strangers. The temperature is taken down to 67 or 68 degrees, which is ideal for sleeping, and each person gets a little cot, a blanket, and an eye mask.

The class is designed to help boost your mental and physical wellbeing and reinvigorate the mind and body.

While it may seem ridiculous to some people, taking naps has remarkable benefits for our mental health, which is backed by research from Pennsylvania’s Allegheny College. And think about it: Nap-time has been working for years in kindergartens all over the planet. So, maybe it’s time for us adults to give Napercize a try.

Watching Shark Tank or America’s Got Talent? Well, more and more people are at Spin class at the gym… or on the treadmill. 9pm is the new go-to time for working out, according to the Mind Body journal. It’s the fastest growing choice for workouts at fitness studios. There are 46 TIMES more classes booked at 9pm now than there were 10 years ago… mostly because people have more free time at night and gyms are staying open later to accommodate people’s schedules. The bonus of exercising at night? People are able to go 20% longer than in the morning – without feeling fatigued. That’s according to the journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism. That’s because our body uses oxygen more efficiently at night.

What we watch while doing cardio at the gym can impact our workout, according to Australia’s University of Western Sydney. For example, skip news or game shows, because whatever triggers deep thinking can tank your workout intensity. Instead watch shows with a physical component that’ll inspire you to work up a sweat, like “The Amazing Race,” or a sporting event. Because research shows when people watch a video of someone else being active, it increases blood flow, heart rate, sweat and respiration.

You can use water to power through a tough workout by sticking it in the freezer first (even though it’s winter). According to exercise physiologist, Dr. Lawrence Armstrong, in a study, people who sipped icy cold water before and during a strenuous workout were able to keep going significantly longer than those who drank room-temperature water. That’s because the ice-cold water cools your core temperature.

Even if you hate to exercise, and avoid it like the plague, you can still get motivated to get moving. How? By finding something, anything about it that interests you. For example, think about the conversation you might get into with the person on the treadmill next to you. Or the new move you’ll learn in cardio dance class.

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin found that when people in a study group were told they could take the elevator or the stairs but that there was a rare painting on the landing two floors up, 10% more people took the stairs instead of the elevator. The reason? The researchers believe it’s because we don’t like unresolved mysteries. So our curiosity pushes us to follow through on actions that require willpower. And they believe that knowing this, we can use it on ourselves to boost our willpower, and get more exercise. They suggest that while you’re deciding whether or not to go to the gym, think about the interesting things you might learn, or what might happen, while you’re at the gym. That could be all the motivation you need to get there.

But who wants to come back to work dripping with sweat? The best move is to cool down quickly with cold water – inside and out. We continue to sweat after a workout because our core body temperature is still above normal. If we lower our core temperature, we’ll stop sweating. So after your workout, drink 12 ounces of cold water slowly – so you don’t get brain freeze. Then, take a shower that’s as cold as you can stand. If you’re still sweating when you get out of the shower, drink more cold water. That comes from Dr. David Nielson, who specializes in treating people for excessive sweating.

Next time you hit the treadmill, raise the incline. Exercise physiologist Tom Holland says the “zero setting” on most machines is actually slightly downhill. He says a 1-point-zero incline will be flatter, and help you burn more calories.

go-to-gym-anyway-wp

Go to the gym anyway. Research found you’re 70% more likely to exercise if you just see other people working out. Think of it as exercise peer pressure. Because seeing other people exercising can subliminally inspire you to be more active! That’s why it’s good to hit the gym during peak hours – so you have the best chance of seeing others being physically active.
