…from the Water Quality and Health Council.

First: 1‑in‑five adults admit to peeing in the pool.

Also, nearly 70% of swimmers don’t shower before swimming. That just adds to the germ soup already in the pool.

Then, if your eyes are turning red, get out of that pool! It’s NOT a reaction to chlorine, because the only thing that causes pool red-eye is bodily fluids and waste.

Finally, a chemically, chlorine smell doesn’t mean there’s too much chlorine in the pool – it means there’s not enough – and what IS in there is reacting with waste matter.

…which means yours are probably pretty gross by now. So here are some cleaning tips:

First: Seal them overnight in a bag of coffee grounds or dryer sheets, or for 24 hours in a plastic bag in the freezer. That’ll help remove odors, according to the Bright Nest blog.

Or put a couple of drops of cedarwood or sandalwood essential oil on the insole of each flip-flop. It’ll leave a fresh scent without irritating your feet.

And you can sprinkle rubber flip-flops with baking soda, and after an hour, rinse with water and vinegar. That’s the “classic de-stinking” technique.

What happens if you go to a public restroom, sit down, and realize someone sprinkled on the seat? It’s gross… But is it dangerous? Microbiologist Dr. Phillip Tierno says, no. You won’t pick up an illness or infection UNLESS you have an open wound on your rear end, or you touch the damp seat, then touch your eyes, nose or mouth. Because, although urine does contain bacteria, it’s generally not harmful. Just remember to wash your hands after using the restroom.

If you exercise while wearing earbuds – you’re at risk from cardio ear! It’s similar to swimmer’s ear – because when sweat collects in your ear canal, it can cause an infection within 24-hours. Ear, nose and throat specialist Dr. Eugene Chio says when sweat gets trapped in your ear, it creates the perfect moist environment for bacteria to thrive. So how do you know if you have cardio ear? It’ll be painful, throbbing with an oozy discharge… and it’s not just gross, it’s dangerous. It could rupture your eardrum! So give your earbuds a rest at least once a week – and go old-school with over-the-ear headphones.

I’m talking about picking your nose. And according to Dr. Friedrich Bishinger, a top immunology doctor, it’s one of the best ways to stay healthy! The doctor claims that people who pick their noses are healthier than non-pickers. Because using a finger gets into places you can’t reach with a handkerchief, and keeps your nasal passages much cleaner. Just make sure your hands are clean, so you don’t transfer any infection-causing bacteria into your system. And don’t do it in public.
