Make some fresh ginger tea! That’s the suggestion of registered dietician Brooke Alpert. Ginger has natural anti-inflammatory properties, because it contains compounds linked to relaxing blood vessels and preventing blood clots. And just one cup of ginger tea can help ward off headaches and muscle pain as effectively as some pain medications! For the best results, Alpert recommends boiling a 2-inch piece of ginger root in 2 cups of water for 10 minutes. Then, let the water cool, strain it into a mug, and sip away your pain.

So you’ve got a cold or the flu…

Here’s what to eat/drink to feel better, according to clinical dietitians at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

First: Ginger: If you’re feeling nauseous, ginger has been shown to provide relief. Try ginger tea, or add it to soup or a stir-fry.

Another food to eat when you’re sick: Garlic. It has healing antiviral and antibacterial properties.

Finally, feel better by eating bananas. They’re easy to digest on an upset stomach and provide potassium, an essential electrolyte that helps maintain the right balance of water for optimal cell function.

What carbonated beverage do you choose when flying?

Why are people more likely to order ginger ale on a plane than on the ground? Some people think that’s because ginger is known to relieve nausea, like from motion sickness or anxiety. But the ginger ale on planes doesn’t contain any ginger… or if it does, it’s trace amounts of ginger concentrate for flavoring. So it’s not providing the medicinal benefits. So why pick ginger ale?

It’s more likely the placebo effect at work. We THINK it’s going to make us feel better, so it does. But really, ANY carbonated drink would make us feel better. Because, according to neurobiologist Dr. E. Carstens from UC Davis, when the carbon dioxide bubbles pop on your tongue, they react with an enzyme on your taste buds and create carbonic acid. Like most acids, the carbonic acid hurts a little, but it’s a good hurt because it makes your brain release feel-good endorphins.

So can candied ginger or a ginger supplement. A study in Nutritional Biochemistry found that a compound in ginger stops the immune system from overreacting to the histamine that triggers allergies. But talk to your doctor. Because the volatile oils in ginger – called gingerols – have anti-inflammatory properties – which can interfere with blood clotting medications.

This might sound weird, but it comes from the Annals of Emergency Medicine… They say, if you’re nauseous, smell some hand sanitizer. In studies, when people who were queasy smelled cotton pads soaked in isopropyl alcohol, they felt HALF as sick 10 minutes later. And isopropyl alcohol is a main ingredient in most hand sanitizing gels. It’s not the germ killing properties that do the trick – it’s simply the strong smell! Because peppermint oil and ginger oil worked just as well. But you’re more likely to have a tube of hand sanitizer nearby.

Get ginger. Candied ginger is not only a sweet treat, it can reduce the amount of gas in your digestive system. That’s according to research from University Hospitals in Cleveland. They say there’s a compound in ginger – called gingerol – that reduces inflammation in the intestines, helps the body break down and digest carbohydrates, and stimulates the release of bile… And bile is what breaks down fats, which can irritate the intestines. All you need are two slices of candied ginger when you’re feeling gassy and bloated. And if gas is a chronic problem for you, make candied ginger a daily treat. It can cut gas by 40% or more.

Next time you’re on an airline flight, look around and count how many people order ginger ale. A bunch of ‘em, right? That’s because a lot of people know, and we’ve talked about it on this show, that ginger can relieve nausea and motion sickness. But the fact is, conventional ginger ale doesn’t contain any ginger… Or if it does, it’s trace amounts of ginger-concentrate, for flavoring. So it’s not providing the medicinal benefits. So then…why pick ginger ale?

Experts say it’s more likely the placebo effect at work. We believe it’s going to make us feel better, so it does. But really, any carbonated drink would make us feel better. According to neurobiologist Dr. E. Carstens from UC Davis, when the carbon dioxide bubbles pop on your tongue, they react with an enzyme on your taste buds to create carbonic acid. Like most acids, carbonic acid stings just a little, but it’s a good, fizzy sting. And Dr. Carstens says the mild pain makes your brain send feel-good endorphins into your bloodstream. So you do, in fact, feel better… And since we believe it’s the ginger doing the work, the feeling is enhanced that much more.

Did you know that in general, women bruise more easily than men because their skin is thinner? People also bruise more easily as they age, because the skin gets thinner and blood vessels become more fragile. We also bruise more easily if our skin has sun damage. Natural redheads also bruise more easily, compared to people with brown or blonde hair. It has something to do with a mutation of the gene that controls pigment.

Bruising could also have something to do with medications you may be taking, ones that thin the blood – like ibuprofen or aspirin, or prescription blood thinners. Some supplements and foods can also have a blood-thinning effect, mostly things that we associate with good heart health, like fish oil and vitamin E, and foods like garlic and ginger.

If you’re beat up from an intense workout, make this drink to ease your aches and pains, re-hydrate and get some antioxidants: Grate a piece of fresh ginger – about the size of your thumb – into a mug. Top with boiling water. Steep for 5 minutes, strain and sweeten with honey.

Studies show that ginger can reduce pain by 25%. That’s because it has anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties.

The compounds that give ginger its spicy flavor are more effective at suppressing coughs than over-the-counter cough medicines. To make your own: Grate a piece of ginger as big as your thumb into a mug, top with boiling water. Steep it for 5 minutes, strain it, and sweeten it to taste with honey. You can also squeeze a lemon wedge into the cup if you’d like. Enjoy!
